Spoilers for Despair Girls

Her head semed to be stuffed with cotton, her joits were achey, and her eyes, glassy. The young child blinked, trying to make sense of what was happening. Clutched in her pale hand, a pair of bloody, metallic scissors. The girl froze, her blood running cold. There was a loud klang as the art supply met the cold floor.

A trickle of blood made its way onto Toko's hand. She looks up, terrified of what she was about to witness. She regretted opening her eyes in the first place. She wanted to scream, but she couldn't. She felt a lump form in her throat. She scurried outside of that place - wherever that place was - and tried her best to forget what she saw. She slowed down almost immediately, feeling a shooting pain on her leg. She lifted up her skirt, revealing a scratch. She ignores it, figuring it was something she got while asleep.

Toko would never forget that day. The day when it all began.

The teenage girl picked at the scars on her leg. The roman numerals read "15". The number sent shivers down her spine. Tears welled up in her eyes. She sobbed quietly. 15 times she's fallen in love. 15 times she's been rejected. 15 times she's seen their dead bodies, slashed by a familiar, recurring weapon. A carefully crafted pair of scissors. She bit her already sore lip, making it bleed. Her eyes widen as she realizes what's about to happen. She lets our a soft, "no... not again...". Her eyes meet the shiny drop of blood, and her vision goes black.

She wakes up in a pool of blood. She struggled to standup, feeling very panicky. She looks up to the body in front of her. Toko winces immediately, a reminder that the number of bodies she's seen has increased. It didn't do well to her psychological state, but then again, was her brain ever okay? She holds the cold, dead hands of the 16th man she's become infatuated with. It sends painful pangs to her broken heart, but she ignores it. She's gotten used to it.

Nightmares continued to disrupt her sleep every night.

Toko's eyes opened suddenly, the familiar snoring of her new companion muffling any other sound being made outside of the barren cell they were trapped in. She groaned, thoughts of master Togami plaguing her mind. As she was lost in her thoughts, Komaru suddenly popped up. She was confused. All thoughts of the blonde man who has captivated her heart halted to a stop. Toko frowned, trying to get rid of the annoying, typical teen she was forced to journey with.

She couldn't.

Toko sighed begrudgingly, turning to lie on her side, succumbing to the thoughts of Komaru. She stared at the messy brown bob that she shared the bed with. This thought stirred emotions in Toko's body, emotions she wasn't familiar with. This puzzled her further, but she simply blamed it on her drowsiness.

Time passed. She looked back on her little adventure so far, and she couldn't help but have a small smile form on her face. She had no idea why, but she did. She hasn't smiled like this in so very long. It felt... nice. She continued smiling for what seemed like an eternity, and before she knew it, she was playing around with Komaru's hair. When Toko realized, she abruptly stopped, yet her fingers still remained entangled in the mess.

"W-what... am I d-doing....?" Toko murmured softly, feeling extremely awkward, despite nobody watching. Her cheeks grew red, and she reluctantly withdrew her hands. Her heart was spiraling out of control, her head felt like it was going to explode any minute, and her hands were shaking uncontrollably. She knew she was about to--

"..st..o..p..sha..kin..g" Toko snapped back to reality, her attention was directed to Komaru's sleeping form. Komaru's eyes were open slightly, and a cute frown graced her features. This calmed down Toko, and Komaru drifted back to sleep. Toko's smile reappeared, and her heart calmed.

Toko was at peace once more, and she decided to try her luck and sleep again. Perhaps her dreams would be better this time. Her eyes shut, and she dozed off, thoughts of Komaru clogged her thoughts

There was a blissful smile on her face.

Toko awoke on the floor. She let out a tsk, assuming Komaru pushed her off in her sleep. She sat up, and a familiar pain shot up her leg. Toko's world stopped completely. She frantically lifted up her skirt. It read, "17".

"No..." She murmured repeatedly. She stayed in that position, hoping she would eventually wake up from this nightmare. She never did.

She denied it with all her might.

But the truth couldn't be avoided.

Komaru's cold, dead eyes stared at Toko's. She let out a scream, alerting the adults that kept them captive. When they reached the cell, Toko was curled up in a corner, not daring to speak.

All she said was,

"Reload.reload.reload.reload.reload.reload.reload.reload.reload.reload.reload.reload.reload."
