Another late night.
Emily didn't need to look at the clock to know that. She'd sat in silence for too long. Something was wrong. Had to be. The sky was dark, and the room was empty. The moments hung in the air, and the seconds never seemed to leave.
VRIP!
The break in the silence would have made her jump, had it not been the only sound in the world she wanted to hear.
Emily got to her feet, and turned to the open door. She was standing there, just as she always did. Beautiful as ever. Her brown hair spiked up, swaying as she pulled the goggles off her small face. Peeled away, her brown eyes found Emily's and they both smiled.
"Sorry to keep you waiting," she said.
Within a moment, the incredible happened. With a flash of amazing, blue light and the same "VRIP" sound as before, the beautiful woman almost spontaneously appeared before Emily. They met in a brief yet impassioned kiss, before, once again, there was a brilliant blue light.
The woman reappeared in the blink of an eye by a pyramid-like charging station by the wall, and she lifted from her chest a glowing, blue-lighted device and placed it atop the station. The blue light flickered, but didn't yield. It seemed to hum quietly as the woman removed armored pieces from her forearms, and placed them beside the device.
She "blinked" again, this time to the chair where she haphazardly removed her brown bomber jacket, and lazily threw it across chair's arm. Now wearing only a white undershirt and her bright, orange spandex leggings. Lena Oxton, "Tracer", blinked once more. She wrapped her arms around Emily's waist, and she pulled her close.
Resting her head on Lena's shoulder, Emily closed her eyes and embraced the hug's warmth. It was a feeling that was becoming increasingly welcome.
Pulling back, Lena looked up at Emily's freckled face, and she smiled for a moment, until she noticed that there was something off. Emily smiled, but her eyes didn't reciprocate it. Her expression was more somber than Lena had expected.
"What's wrong, love?" Lena asked, bringing her right hand to meet Emily's warm cheek.
"It's nothing," Emily said, leaning into her palm. She closed her eyes.
"I've known you too long for that to work," Lena said, quietly and with a smirk. "Tell me."
Emily took a deep breath, and pulled back from Lena's warm hand, leaving surprise on Lena's face.
"It's two-thirty," she said, wrapping her arms around her chest.
"It's late, I know." Lena said, but Emily continued on.
"You said it would be fast," Emily said.
"And we ran into some issues, dear. It was a little complicated. I'm sorry it ran longer."
"It's not the time that's the issue," Emily said. She brought her palm to her forehead. "I'm sorry, I don't want you to think I'm angry at you."
Lena took a step closer, and she saw a tear fall down Emily's cheek.
"I know you aren't," Lena said.
"I worry too much," Emily said. "I'm worried now that you're back out there."
Lena brought her hands up to Emily's and she turned Emily's head to face hers. Their eyes met.
"I worry too," Lena said calmly.
"I wasn't a part of your life the first time," Emily said, smiling. "I watched it on the news, from home. Now, I feel so much closer to it. It's not just news anymore. It's your life. My life. It scares me."
