Wind dances over Piper's fingertips as she extends her arm out of the passenger side window, a ghost of a smile pulling at her full lips.
Her eyelids flutter closed as she breathes in the summer night air, the stars watching from above. Humidity clings to her exposed skin, her jean shorts ridden up uncomfortably as she sits in Weston's truck. Thoughts of tonight's fireworks teasing her excitedly as she holds her bottom lip between her teeth.
"On a scale of one to ten, how lame do you think they'll be this year?" Weston gives her a sideways smile, effectively bringing her out of her stupor.
"Hm?" She replies, blinking a few times with her thin eyebrows furrowed.
Weston chuckles, a small dimple appearing on his right cheek shyly. "The fireworks. How lame do you think they'll be this year? Last Fourth, they were terrible."
"I remember." She rolls her eyes, a memory of the year before twisting her insides but having nothing to do with the fireworks. Last Fourth of July was the night she lost her innocence. To a guy she thought was "the one" but ended up being just like every other guy who only wanted one precious thing from her. She had spent the night crying away the pain but even now it haunts her.
Weston remains silent and she knows he realizes what she means, the rest of the ride quiet and solemn.
When they arrive in the large field filled with family, friends, and schoolmates, Weston sets up the bed of the truck. Piper watches as he spreads blankets over the hard surface along with a couple of pillows from his room and a collection of their favorite foods.
His arm flexes slightly when he grabs her small hand to pull her up and into the back of the truck with him. Her eyes watch the movement with curiosity.
They talk for a moment just before a loud BOOM erupts from the sky, lighting up the large field and exposing the night's clouds.
A grin appears on Piper's face, immediately looking over at Weston to see his reaction to the fantastic display overhead.
The smile falls from her lips when her heart beats a little faster. She watches as her best friend's blue eyes glisten under the technicolored lights, his lips agape, watching intently.
She pushes the feeling down but it only seems to grow. Blinking several times, she attempts to force herself to stop; to make the feelings go away. Panic sets in.
This can't be happening.
"You okay?" Weston's full eyebrows furrow as he turns to her, his face full of concern.
Piper considers expressing her confusion, perhaps playing it off as nothing, but she knows the seed growing in her isn't going to go away and the feelings and thoughts that have been planted will only grow.
She knows this is only the beginning.
Her breath catches in her throat as she throws on a fake smile.
"I'm fine."
