"Nina, Mr. Chap needs to see you." Lizzy, my best friend, said. I gave an acknowledging nod and hurried to Mr. Chap's office.
"You needed me?"s I asked when I walked in. Mr. Chap waved for me to sit down and started talking.
"You have a talent for the martial arts and it is a shame that we don't have a higher education for it so I'm moving to a higher skilled school." Disappointment flooded me. I wanted to jump at the opportunity but I would miss this place so much.
"Sir I don't know-" I started but he cut me off.
"I didn't ask you I'm doing it you need higher education." My eyes pleaded with him but he dismissed me and I walked out.
"You look like your dog just died. What did he want?" Lizzy had been waiting for me outside and was walking with me to my car.
"He's moving me to a new school because I need 'higher education'" I spat the words out.
"But that's great! Why would you be sad about that?" Lizzy's voice held a bit of excitement.
"Because this has become my home! I can't just leave it!" I said exasperated.
"You can always come and visit." I had pulled into her driveway and waited for her to get out.
"Yea I guess so." I was still upset with the whole thing and just wanted to be alone. "I'll see you tomorrow." She got out and waved as I drove out of the driveway. Great now I'm going to have to make new friends and change up my schedule, I thought as I pulled into my drive. "I'm home!" I shouted a greeting.
"Hey sweetie how was school today?" Mom asked as she handed me an apple.
"Pretty good I got everything done today and Mr. Chap is moving me to a different school for higher education." She beamed at the good news and pride finally set in.
"Glad you had fun I got a pile of homework I have no idea how to do." My brother, Mika, grumbled.
"Aw don't be such a grumpy cat. I'll help you." Although I was much younger than Mika he had trouble doing things with his condition. He had autism and needed more help than he would ask for.
"No thanks." He had a stubborn glint in his eye.
"Now Mike let the smart girl help you." Dad strode into the room and put his arm around my shoulder. Everytime people compare me to my brother I'm horrified. It isn't his fault that he isn't capable of the things I am.
"Dad he's as smart as anyone else." I defended, glancing over at Mika. His eyes were full of hurt and he turned around to go to his room.
"I heard your going to a better educated school." Dad said ignoring Mika.
"I'm so tired of you. You're never here and when you are you brag on me and make Mike feel like crap! Stop doing that you are such a jerk!" I screamed at him. I spun around and stomped to my room. My room was decorated with posters of animals, assassin creed, and martial arts. Books shelves lined one wall and they were all slam full of books that I have and haven't read. In front of the shelves was a rug with bean bags, pillows, and comfy chairs. My bed had a puppy comforter on it and next to it stood a tall lamp. I put my backpack on the hook on my door and slumped into a bean bag, grabbing the book I was currently reading. Was it possible that I was half human half vampire? I asked myself. It was never heard of but anything could be possible. I read and thought to myself. It would be so cool if this book was real. My door opened and I looked back to see Mika standing there looking uncertain. "Hey come in and shut the door." He did as I told him and he sat in the chair in front of me. "What's up?"
"Why don't you brag about how smart you are? Why do you stick up for me when I'm so dumb?" His voice was rushed and breathless.
"Bragging is stupid and does it really matter if your smart? I stick up for you because it's the right thing to do and your my brother why shouldn't I?" I answered honestly. His eyes were thoughtful and I let the silence stretch, waiting for him to say something.
"Being smart is better than being dumb like me." He finally said. I shook my head and tapped the book I was reading.
"The girl in my book is dumber than you are and she got stranded on an island with the really smart boy. She knew how to survive in that situation and he didn't. Do you still think being smart is better than being dumb? You could survive someone if they had a knife to your throat."
"You and your books." His eyes had a teasing glint in it and I smiled.
"My books are my baby's." I hugged the book to my chest, making him laugh.
"Will you play basketball with me?" He finally asked after another long moment of silence.
"Sure beat you there!" I hopped up and ran for my door, shutting in his face. A prickle of unease went down my spine when I reached the living room and I quickly stopped. Something knocked into my back and I quickly maneuvered away and reached for the persons arm, pinning it behind their back.
"Ow! Nina!" Mika shouted.
"Shush be quiet." I hissed at him. He instantly froze. I couldn't even hear him breathing as I slowly checked the house with him right behind me.
"Nina, darling what are you doing?" Mom asked and I pressed my finger to my lips, using my eyes to warn her to be quiet. Her eyes widened at the knowledge that something wasn't right. Mika stayed with mom as I finally reached the office. As I opened the door something foul smelling reached me. I gagged at the smell and closed the door for some fresh air.
"Nina what happened?" Mika asked quietly. I shook my head, covered my nose, and ran into the room. I screamed at the sight that met my eyes. Dad had a piece of wood stuck through his chest, nailing him to the wall. His eyes had been punctured and a note was stuck between his fingers. "Nin-" A gasp sounded from behind me and mom started bawling while Mika stared at the sight. Something crashed in the kitchen and he ran to go see what it was. I pushed mom in the closet in the office and ran after him. As I ran into the room a guy was thrown into a wall. "You killed dad!" Mike was yelling at the stranger. The boy looked helpless and was trying to say something but Mika kept interrupting him.
"OK EVERYONE SHUT UP!" My voice rose over theirs. Instantly everything got quiet. "Who are you?" I turned to the boy.
"Brian."
"Why are you here?"
"You are in danger." He said simply.
"Why and who killed my dad?" My voice held a tinge of anger.
"You are not who you think you. The vampire killers are after your family." Panic and anger filled me as I took a step towards him.
"What kind of psychopath are you?" I hissed at him. "No one would ever believe that." As soon as I said it someone crashed through the window and grabbed Mika. I was quick to grab the guy from behind and put him in a choke hold, but he was strong and had me flying through the air in seconds. Brian had put himself between the guy and Mika. He quickly pulled out a wooden rod that I didn't even notice that he had.
"You would be better off leaving right now." Brian's voice was full of warning as he glared at the guy. Before he said anything I was behind him, pushing him into the wooden rod. He gave a quick jerk and went limp. I knew I should feel horrified that I had just killed someone but he was after my brother and I didn't care. "Do you believe me now?" I glanced over at Mika to see sad acceptance in his eyes. I shook my head quickly denying the truth.
"No it's impossible it can't be true!" I had put my hands over my eyes and kept shaking my head.
"Sweetie I'm so sorry you got dragged into this. We didn't think they would find us." Mom's voice was close behind me and I dropped my hands.
"What's happening!" I shouted, turning on my heel, to face her.
"You're father is a werewolf and I'm a witch/vampire half breed. The laws in the Night world say we weren't allowed to fall in love but we did and now your father has paid the price. If we do not listen to this young man we will all wind up dead." She explained gently and grasped my shoulders. "We have to do what he says he's from day court and helps people in our situations."
"How do you know? He could be impersonating one of them." I retorted. Brian sighed loudly from behind me and I turned my head to glare at him.
"I want you to trust me but I don't expect you to. But before you make any rash decisions know this either you can come with me and may or may not be killed or you can stay here and definitely be killed." Sadly he had a point and I hated him even more for it.
"Fine what should we pack?"
"Clothes, food, necessities. Whatever you do pack make sure you pack light." Mom and Mika went upstairs to pack their things while I kept staring at him. "We don't have much time." He whispered.
"Whatever happens you better keep them safe." I said and rushed upstairs.
