It was cold. Kyla walked out of her house and immediately folded her arms across her chest. Her short-sleeved shirt didn't give her much protection from the pounding wind.
Her brother walked out of the house right behind her. "Well, this is lovely weather for an August morning."
Kyla didn't reply.
"Kyla, are you listening to me?"
"Sorry, I'm nervous. What you say isn't really important to me."
"It's the first day of high school, not a basketball tournament that determines your future. Why are you so nervous?"
Kyla turned around and look at her brother. "You don't think high school determines your future?"
"You have four years to do that."
"So your not nervous about our first day?"
"The only thing I'm nervous about is you telling the whole school were twins."
"What's wrong with being my twin?"
"Everything."
"So, you would rather be an only child?"
"Wouldn't everyone?"
"Drexel... Just don't do anything stupid on your first day," Kyla said changing the subject. Drexel scowled at her and they both left to catch the bus.
At school Kyla looked at herself in the little plastic mirror she had in her locker. Even for fraternal twins, Kyla and Drexel looked a lot a like. They both had a golden brown kind of color hair, they both had the same green eyes and their noses looked exactly the same. Kyla grabbed her binder out of her locker and walked into her homeroom. The first thing she saw when she walked in, was her brother sitting in a desk at the back of the classroom. Drexel saw Kyla walk in and he immediately got up and walked over to her.
"What are you doing here?" he whispered angrily.
"I'm here for homeroom."
"Me too."
"I thought you said you had Mr. Ache."
"I do."
"Actually," the teacher said interrupting their conversation, "it's pronounced Mr. Ace. Now take your seats so I can take attendance."
"You pronounced the name wrong! How could you possibly mispronounce, ace? " Kyla whispered slapping the back of Drexel's head.
Kyla and Drexel sat in the seats that where furthest from each other in the room.
Mr. Ace started to call attendance. "Emily Abel?"
"Here."
"Scott Brantley?"
"Here."
Mr. Ace kept going down and called, "Drexel Lake?"
"Here."
"Kyla Lake?"
"Here."
Mr. Ace stopped calling attendance. "Are you two twins?"
"Nope. We are not related in any way."
Everyone turned to the voice coming from the back of the room.
"Drexel," Kyla said across the room, "if a teacher asks if where twins we should tell him the truth so we don't get in trouble."
"Where not going to get in trouble."
"I'm pretty sure we are."
"I hate to barge into your conversation again," Mr. Ace said, "but I can't have my students talking to each other from across the room. And I'm guessing that you two actually are twins."
