Humanist
Part One of the Humanist Chronicles: The Age of Oil and Steel
Perspective of Chloe. Time: 2198, 180 years in the future in New New York, New York. After the Others and Least of This.
Chapter One
This age was widely being called the age of oil and steel referencing the age of blood and iron started by Bismarck in the late 1800s in Europe. New York has grown so large that people have renamed this newish futuristic city, New New York. I know great naming. The human race is expanding throughout the solar system and those systems near it. We have a colony on The Moon, Mars, and a planet orbiting Alpha Centauri. Most jobs are fully automated now with the exception of those such as; jobs in politics legal jobs, jobs to build and repair the robots, scientists, and pilots.
My name is Chloe and I live here in New New York and I dream of piloting my own spaceship one day. My family isn't that well off, but we manage to get by with my famous uncle helping out to pay rent. My Uncle Todd helped invent some of the technology we use today and they say he did more for earth than anyone else in history. He is taking me and a few of my best friends to the space station where they launch the rockets. We get there by going on the space elevator that takes hours to get up. We leave in a few days. I am taking my friends Jake, and Sasha, my two best friends.
Chapter Two
It's finally time to go to the International Space Hub or ISH. The space elevator is off the coast of Dubai in the former U.A.E. which is now just part of the International World Betterment Association or the IWBA which controls the entire world after the Great War. It is a two hour flight there and takes 5 hours to go up the space elevator.
We got to the space elevator and started going up at 5,600 miles per hour, but it feels slow because of some science reason. We finally got up the elevator 5 hours later.
"Woah," all of us teenagers exclaimed at once. The ISH was magnificent. It was still in the atmosphere so we could breathe, but at the same time we were in space.
"Wow I can't believe we are sort of in space," Jake declared excitedly.
"Well I guess this is cool, stated Sara pretending like she was already bored.
"Stop being so emo, Sasha. We are on the trip of a lifetime," I remarked.
Chapter Three
Then something strange happened after we had been there for about a week. There had been small reports of a new update for some of the more complex robots that gave them a form of consciousness. This led to small groups of them just stoping their jobs right in the middle of their work. The robots at the ISH are slowly doing whatever they want one after the other maybe it's catching on that they are basically slaves to humanity.
"Hey kids let's go check on some of the robots and see what they are up too," asked Uncle Todd.
We went to the hanger where the robots weren't repairing the spacecrafts like they were supposed to. As soon as we were in a cage fell on top of us from above. The robot came and got Uncle Todd out and shot him.
"We have killed the one who gave us the update," stated the head robot in a computerized voice.
"What should we do with the related one and her friends," replied the robot standing right next to the head robot.
"Keep them locked up, someone will come looking for them soon," replied the head robot.
So that's what happened so far. We need to escape somehow. So, what now?
Chapter 4 Escapement
Perspective of Jake
Chapter 4
I was frustrated because I should have known that was a trap based on the logical circumstances of the situation. I am usually the smart nerd in the friend group, the side character. I thought earlier I would be the main character, but now I am convinced I am only here because of Chloe and her recently deceased Uncle. I can make up for it by saving everyone and getting us out of this prison. As soon as I fashioned a lock pick from loose scrap on the floor four burly men rushed in the room and broke down the cage and carried us out. We were all knocked unconscious and woke up in a dim room in yet another holding cell.
"Hey you. Why are we here." I asked one of the men.
"I am your savior and worst nightmare. Since you have met Mr. Wright, Mrs. Chloe's Uncle we will interrogate you guys, said the men in a Russian accent.
We began to go off from the cell to a chamber with a couple chairs for interrogation. As the man sat down he took off his gas mask and helmet to reveal a robotic face.
Chapter 5
"I stole you away from the other robotic faction you were being held captive by. We are rivals with them. We are just as phased about this as you are and different factions have formed so quickly. Will you join us to stop the other robots. We are friendly to humans and not to enslave them. Just a piece of information to top it off all or most humans are already enslaved on earth. We have two more humans with us as well. Their names are Isabella and Miguel. Isabella is a scientist and Miguel is her son," explained the robot, also my name is Vladimir Smith from the Russian division of robots."
Chloe finally woke up and we explained everything to her again. He showed us to our rooms, with me bunking with Miguel and Sasha bunking with Chloe. Well I hope they don't stab us in the back. Knock on wood.
Chapter 6
Perspective of Sasha
Well this whole thing is pretty messed up. I guess I am glad I am not enslaved on earth right now. And even better I am with my best friend, Chloe and a love interest, Jake.
