"Elena, are you almost ready?" I heard my mother's voice yell down the hallway. I grabbed my white Converse and placed them in my suitcase that laid open on my bed.
"Almost!" I called back, struggling to zip up the suitcase. I walked over to my small white desk, grabbing the small, black makeup bag and stuffed into my carry-on. Walking over to my closet, I hear my mother's voice call for me once more, "Elena!"
I sighed and tightened my ponytail, grabbing my sandy-brown sandals and slipping them on. I threw my carry-on over my shoulder and began walking downstairs, there was no way in hell I was going to carry my suitcase, it was way too heavy. I strolled into the living room where my older brother, Micha, sat.
"Micha, " I spoke. "Can you get my suitcase? It's really heavy." Micha stared up at me from his phone, he let out a long breath.
"I guess so. " he replied. He stood up slowly and began making his way towards the stairs. I grabbed his tan arm.
"Thank you." I smiled. He looked down at me and smiled back. Micha and I were seven years apart, even with a big age gap, we are each others' best friends. When I was five years old, Micha taught me how to ride a bike. He was there when my best friend from elementary school moved away. He's my rock, and my shoulder to cry on.
He came back downstairs with my big, pastel pink suitcase. Micha sat the suitcase next to me. I grabbed the handle and made my way towards the door where my mom was waiting. Micha followed me.
"Have fun, kid." he chuckled and ruffled my hair before pulling me into a gigantic hug. He rested his chin on top of my head.
"Bye Micha." I said as I turned and left the house, closing the glass door behind me. Mom sat in our navy blue car. She had her sunglasses on top of her head and one hand on the steering wheel.
"It's about time, you are going to miss your flight!" My mom spoke through the light buzz of the music that came through the speakers. I huffed and sat back in the leather seat, fixing my hair in the passenger seat mirror. I pulled my phone out from my back pocket and opened my messages.
1 unopened message
G-Ma: I can't wait to see you! I have a big surprise for you when you get here!
I smiled at the text. My Grandma is one of the few people that I text, or even talk to anymore. I'm pretty excited that I get to spend the entire summer with her, and the fact my Mom is actually letting me. I pulled my earbuds out of the front pocket of my carry-on bag.
"El," my mother's voice was soft. "Please be careful while you're gone. Wear your sunscreen, don't do drugs, and please, be safe if you go to any parties." I looked up at her, and her soft green eyes were looking back at me. Because of Micha being seven year old than I, I got to go to all the parties he was invited to when he turned 21. So, I have been exposed to alcohol....quiet a few times.
"I will, Mom." I reassured her The hand she wasn't driving with, reached over and grabbed one of mine.
"I love you, Elena. I know you will have fun in New Jersey." she said. I just looked out the window, watching the trees go by in a slight blur. I will admit, I am kind of nervous to be on my own in New Jersey.
I slipped my earbud in my ear and plugged them into the headphone jack on my phone. I pressed shuffle and the song, Give Me Love by Ed Sheeran came on. Ed's melodic voice made my eyes slowly close, and the next thing I know, I have fallen asleep.
-----
"Elena Jane. You need to wake up, we are here." I heard my mother's voice as she shook me awake.
"Alright, alright. I'm up." I replied back. I ripped the earbuds out and wrapped them around my phone, and then placed it into my bag. I walked through the doors of the airport, wheeling my big suitcase behind me. I took my ticket out from the front pocket of my carry-on and handed it to the lady at the front desk.
"Okay Miss North, just head through those doors to your right, and you will go through security there. " the older lady told me and handed me back my ticket.
"Thank you." I replied and took my things and began making my way towards the doors. When I walked through the doors, there was already a long line for the security. Luckily, I still had a few hours to spare before my flight took off.
I waited in line for about two hours before I go to the first security guard.
"Hello, how are you?" the guard spoke, their voice very monotone.
"I'm well. How are you?" I asked the guard. They looked up at me and smiled a little. "I am well also, thank you."
I walked through the metal detector and luckily, no beep. I let out a long breath of relief. Even though I knew I didn't have anything metal or anything that could be dangerous, I was still nervous going through security.
Another hour passed by the time I had finished going through security. I till had half an hour before my flight took off. There was tons of people in the main lobby. I mean, it is summer and people are going on vacations, bu I didn't expect this many people so early in the summer. I looked at the ticket in my hand, my finger sticking to the glossy material. My mom followed behind me as I walked towards the male flight attendant at the entrance of my flight.
"Ticket, please." I handed him the ticket, lightly covered in sweat from my clammy palms. The man ripped off the bottom part of the ticket and handed it to me. I smiled and walked through the doors of the entrance to the plane. I looked at my mom. She had tears on the brims in her eyes.
"Have fun, El" she choked. I nodded and made my way towards the plane doors. I took one more glance back, and the doors behind me began to close. I sighed,
Good-bye West Virginia. Hello, New Jersey.
