Chapter 1
I laid there restlessly, flipping through pages of a book I had just bought from the new bookstore down the street. This was just like every night. No brother here to bruise my skin, it was just me and this book. I began to read when suddenly the back door slammed shut causing me to jump.
"Alex!" A slurred, angry voice echoed from the kitchen.
It was Justin, back from another night at the bar. My peaceful night had come to an end.
"Justin, you're drunk. Again!" I sighed as I gently set the book aside and sat up.
"Get off your lazy ass and do something useful would you!" He screamed as he threw his half full vodka bottle at me.
Quickly I ducked, but not fast enough. The edge of the bottle hit the top of my head causing the bottle to shatter. I scurried to my feet and felt the top of my head. My head had busted open from the bottle. Grabbing my book, I rushed to the stairs, but before I could reach the bottom of the stairs, my brother grabbed my arm.
"Did I say you can go anywhere?" He screamed as his fist repeatedly met my face.
"J-Justin! Stop! Please!" I pleaded as he threw me to the ground.
I shot back up and ran up the stairs, trying to save myself from my drunken brother. I made it to my room, slamming the door behind me. I listened to him curse and toss bottles against the walls.
"Alex!" Justin shouted as thuds came from the stairs.
Crying, I hid under my bed ignoring the pain throbbing from my head. A suddenly yelp of pain echoed throughout the house. I felt fear creep through my veins as an eerie silence filled the air and I slowly neared the door.
"J-Justin?" I mumbled as I opened the door and slowly crept to the stairs, afraid of what I might see.
When I reached the top of the staircase, I trembled as I saw my lifeless brother, lying halfway up the stairs, a knife lodged in his back.
Frozen in fear, I stared at him with tears flooding my vision. I slowly walked closer to him and dropped beside him as my cries worsened.
"Justin.. I'm so sorry." I cried as I hugged his lifeless body.
He may have hurt me, but I loved him, for he was all I had left.
"Justin, please! Wake up!" I cried as I shook him.
"Didn't he hurt you?" An eerie voice asked from behind me.
I quickly spun around in anger. Standing in the corner of the room, was a man. His eyes glowed, and red oozed from them. He never blinked, nor closed his eyes, always open just staring at me.
"You. You did this." I shouted as I cried.
"You killed my brother! You did this!" I finished.
"No. I didn't kill him dear." The man stated as he started laughing.
"He's just, sleeping." The man finished laughing and lunged towards me.
As an instinct, I jolted out of the way, causing the man to fall. I stared as he turned to me, an inhumanly smile stretched across his face. His large, soulless eyes stared back at mine.
"Do you not want to sleep?" He shouted as he yanked the knife from Justin's back.
As his voice echoed through the house, my vision began to blur and I fell to the floor. I took one glance at my pale, dead brother before everything went black.
