Chapter 1

It was the summer after eighth grade when I first met him. He had dark brown hair, and shiny light brown eyes. He was fairly tall, maybe about six feet. I was sitting outside of my favorite café. He walked over to me and sat down. I looked up from the book I was reading, and made eye contact with him.

"Hello," I said as he just sat there looking at me.

"Oh, sorry! It's just that I couldn't help but notice that you're reading," He said.

"Is reading a crime?" I asked him. I almost started laughing at the idea of reading being illegal.

He smiled and said, "Yes, I'm the fun police, and it doesn't look like you're having fun."

"Oh but I am having fun. I'm on a date with John Steinbeck!" I said pointing to the cover of my book.

He smiled. "Well if you get bored on your date, you can find me at the beachside basketball court," he said as he started backing away.

I smiled. He was the first guy to actually flirt with me. I stayed at the café for at least another 10 minutes.

I put my book in my bag and decided to take him up on his offer. I walked down the sidewalk towards the beachside basketball court. When I got there he was shooting hoops alone. He threw the ball in the hoop and I caught it.

"So you did get bored on your date," he said. "I thought you wouldn't come," he said as I threw the ball into the hoop.

"Wow, you even have a good free throw," he said.

"I guess I'm just full of surprises," I said with a smile.

We stayed at the beachside court, and played with the basketball for what seemed like only and hour, but really it was three hours.

"I should probably get going," I told him.

"Yeah me too," he replied.

I started to walk away when he said, "Wait, I don't even know your name."

"It's Elle," I answered.

"Elle, it's late at night and there's probably creeps out, so how about I walk you home?" he asked me.

"Since your scared, I guess." I said back.

"Great," he said. "And for he record I'm not scared," he said.

"Yup. I'm sure your not," I said sarcastically as I started to laugh, then he started to laugh too.

We walked the few blocks to my house, talking and laughing.

When we got there he said, "Goodnight."

"Wait, you never told me your name," I told him.

"It's Ryan," he answered as he backed down the street.

"Goodnight, Ryan," I said, but he was too far away to hear.
