Chapter Two

"How'd you sleep?"

It wasn't an odd question, and it's not unusual for a parent/guardian to ask, but to Emily, it was still a question that she loved hearing. It may not be anything too significant, yet it held a deeper meaning than it sounded. One that made Emily's heart soar. Care. A care that she vowed to herself she'd never take advantage of.

"I slept a bit differently. Not like a 'I woke up on the wrong side of the bed differently' though, but more like a 'woah, this is the best sleep I've had in so long' kinda sleep." She answered letting out a soft sounding chuckle.

Anna glanced over at the young girl and smiled. She couldn't quite comprehend how Emily could be so full of light after living through a cycle of darkness for a majority part of her life. The girl had more of a chance of dying than going to a foster home, and that's something that had never left Anna's mind for more than five minutes. It terrified her.

"Anna?"

"Yes?"

"I don't want to go anymore." Emily whispered looking down at her lap.

Is there ever a thought that runs through someone's mind wondering how they can help another person? To have a chance of doing something—anything for them to let them know that there is a human being who cares, and will always care.

"Can you tell me why you don't want to go?" The question seemed so simple to answer, however, in that moment, Emily couldn't really determine what her answer was. It was like a test that contained a various amount of correct answers, but there's only one that's the best.

"I don't want a repeat of my history, Anna."

sorry for the extremely short chapter, but i am working so hard on the other chapters. they are all longer and go into greater detail of emily and her struggles. just think of this as a filler, mini chapter. 😊
