Third Person POV
"The children grow more curious by the day President Hatton. We need to make sure they don't attempt to leave." David sighed. "I'll have a think and make a decree. Have we had complaints?" "Yes sir, many families with adolescents are complaining that their children are becoming curious. There are some cases of conspiracy theories." There was a ring of the telephone. "Hello, President Hatton's office. How can I help you?" "Lucy, it's Emily. Is he busy?" David looked over at his assistant quizzically. 'Emily' she mouthed. He nodded and went back to reading documents. "No honey, come on up." She put the phone down. "Has she shown signs of curiosity?" David laughed. "God no. She finds it ridiculous that people think such a thing."
There was a soft knock at the door. Lucy opened it. "Munchkin!" David exclaimed. "What can I do for you?" Emily plonked a brown paper bag on his desk. "What's this?" "Lunch. Healthy. Eat all of it or I'll tell mum." She said sternly. He laughed and pushed the bag aside. "Dad! Eat it! You know what the doctor said!" David sighed. "Emily, 'the doctor' is your mother." "Doesn't make any difference." She huffed. He sighed and reached into the bag. He pulled out a sandwich on wholemeal bread with cucumber and cream cheese, a fruit smoothie, an apple and a cheese scone. He glanced at his daughter, who had her arms folded across her chest, and gave in, taking a bite of the sandwich. "Sweetheart, what brings you here?" Emily rubbed her arm awkwardly. "I'd like to go shopping." David sighed, handing her a wad of notes. "Here's a hundred pounds. Have fun and I'll see you for dinner." She frowned. "No. I'm not leaving until you finish your lunch." Lucy chuckled from her desk. David laughed but then saw the look on his daughter's face and realised that she wasn't kidding. "Dad! You used to make me eat healthy, so eat or I'll call Grandma and get her to make you." David gasped. "You wouldn't!" "Try me." He hastily took another bit from the sandwich. Emily took out her own lunch. She had a cheese and ham salad baguette, a fruit smoothie, a banana and her own cheese scone.
Emily's POV
I'm Emily Hatton. Yes, President Hatton is my dad, and I'm the first to admit that I'm spoilt, but I'm not a brat. Once I finish school my father wants me to work for The Ministry. I was born the year after the mist. I've been told my whole life that if I leave The Dome then I'll die. I've never been told what happened, or why. My life is pretty cushy, I've never had to do something I don't want to and my dad always fixes things so I can get my way. He's a dictator but a good one, in The Dome we need a dictator. At home I have; my dad David Hatton, President of The Dome, my mum Ruby Hatton, head doctor of a team of doctors that investigated the mist (she also makes sure my family stays healthy) finally, there's my little brother Theo. He's four years old and ready for school, even at that age it's been drilled into us that we can't leave The Dome.
My father was looking at me coolly from across his desk. He chewed in silence. "Can Tom stay over for dinner?" I asked, he paused, sandwich in mid air. He took a bite slowly and chewed thoughtfully, studying me. I met his gaze and stared him down. "I don't see why not. Please tell your mother so she can cook enough food." He replied finally. We ate in silence, he finished the scone. "You made this? It's really good." I smiled and picked up my things, I kissed him on the cheek and walked out of the office.
I stepped out into the sunshine and took out my phone. "Hey babe, you can come over for dinner." "Awesome, I'll see your sexy ass later. I gotta go." I giggled as he hung up. I got into my car and drove to the shopping centre.
"Hey Em." My best friend Ella said, pulling me into a hug. "Hey El. How's your mum?" Two days ago, Ella's mum had been to the hospital, she'd been feeling extremely sick. "Yeah, it turns out that she's pregnant." I was confused, Ella's father hadn't returned after he went searching for his sister outside The Dome. He had left when Ella was ten As far as I knew Mrs Curtis hadn't dated anyone, in the hope that everyone was wrong and her husband would return. "Who's is it?" I asked. "I'm not sure but I think she's been seeing this guy secretly for a few months, she gets back late and is very cagey lately. I think she believes that I'll disapprove because of dad." I know for a fact that Ella had now accepted that her father was dead. Lingering mist must've killed him. If not that then probably exhaustion, dehydration or starvation by now. It had taken a great deal of work to get her to this point but between her mum, me and a therapist, she got there. I was proud of her but maybe her mum dating again would trigger a relapse into denial. "I'm here if you need me." I said softly. "Let's shop!" She said, dragging me off to H&M.
