Emily's POV

After a few days, we restocked our food. We had borrowed some weapons from Mr Curtis. We set off. Charlie had gotten much better at using his power, the training had really paid off. Everything was going to plan, except the fact that I'd had another vision. My father's goons had tried to take Theo. I hadn't mentioned it, Theo probably knew. My father didn't know that Theo could read minds. It still worried me how they men who attacked Charlie had found us. I couldn't shake the feeling that that was bad news. Charlie was keeping Theo occupied while I talked to Jack.

"The journey should take about three days, maybe four. There's plenty of safe places to stop for the night." I nodded slowly. "What can you tell me about my mum?" "Last time I saw her was a few months ago. She had blonde hair, like yours, but here eyes were green. She was always talking about you. She always thought that your father might kill you, I met your father, a number of times. He wasn't a nice man, he was selfish and entitled. Even back then he was powerful, he told us that the mist had conveniently killed everyone with more power than him. He elected himself leader and it's been that way ever since." He paused. "Out here, your mum set up a democracy where she really is a President. She listens to those who put her trust in her. She's managed to build a successful society out here, that your father knows nothing about." He stopped thoughtfully. "I should probably warn you, that your arrival might shake people up, mine did, and I'm not President Hatton's daughter. Many people will try saying that you're a spy. You just need to ignore them. Your mum will believe you. Theo might be different, he's nothing to do with your mum, it could be quite dangerous for him, don't let him go wandering on his own. Understand?" I nodded. "What's my mum's power?" "She can detect lies. It's why she's such a good leader."

After a few hours, it began to get dark. Theo was on Charlie's shoulders. "Not too far and we'll be at a shelter. It's an open tree house." "Ok." We walked in silence until we reached the tree. Charlie put Theo on the ground gently. Jack and Charlie built the fire while Theo and I got some food. We were having pasta with some ham and cheese. We took the pan down. The fire was roaring. It was beginning to get cold. "Theo, go find a jumper." I instructed. The tree house was very similar to the one we had found the day that we escaped. The tree seemed sturdier and there didn't seem to be any animals nearby. Everyone had a biscuit in their pocket just in case. Jack cooked dinner. I snuggled up to Charlie. Theo stood over the fire, studying the pasta. "My mum is President of The Outside. A good one too, from what I'm told. She can detect lies." I recounted to Charlie what Jack had told me. "My mum always told me that she was a good woman, too good for your father. She told her that too. She didn't listen. She was falling in love, she thought that she'd be able to stop him. She was wrong."

After eating, Theo went up with Jack to get some sleep. Charlie and I sat by the fire talking. "I was a student once, I got good grades, always handed in my homework. The system used to work well for us. We used to be happy." Charlie sighed. "What changed?" "My mum used to work in The Minisrty, she worked to find people who were stealing money. One day she found out that one of the guys really close to your father was stealing money, she knew it was only a matter of time before she was fired, so she stole some files about The Outside. None of them ever found out about that. She was told that she could either go quietly or be killed." "That's crazy! I'm really sorry Charlie, I had no idea that my father was like this." I replied sadly. "Nobody does, other than the people that don't have a voice, nobody believes. Ever since Max was killed, I made it my mission to continue his fight. It's gotten harder. In the letter we got from Max, he told us that My father was the guy who was supposed to execute him." I gasped. "The day we got that letter, mum kicked him out. We don't know wether he went through with it, killing his own son, it's crazy to think about it." I took his hands. "You know what, I don't think he killed Max. But unfortunately, I know what type of man my father is. Somebody who knows that much, I think he would've killed him if he refused to kill Max." Charlie nodded. "I know. It means that one of them is definitely dead." He sighed. I kissed him and laid my head on his shoulder.
