All she knew was the ocean. She grew up with the sound of waves crashing and the constant smell of salt in the calming sea breeze. She never walked on land and only ever walked on the deck of her father's boat. She was young and motherless, but she loved her life. Until it all went downhill.
She was at the ripe age of 16, and just becoming a woman, very desirable at that. She was hanging off the side of the boat, her sun-bleached hair rippling in the gentle wind. She was wearing a simple t-shirt and denim shorts, her hair tied back. Her name was Leilani.
Her father called, "Lani, lunch!"
She pulled herself up cheerfully, it was a great day for her. She skipped across the dock and up the stairs into the dining area, plopping herself down.

"Yes, it is! We should go after we eat," he replied, setting down a plate of ham sandwiches.

Then, she saw something at the bottom of her drawer. It was a tiny, silver box that had her mother's initials carved into it. She picked it up gently and flipped the latch on the lid. It had an amulet in it with a teardrop shaped piece of turquoise, and it had odd designs carved in it. She put it back and decided to confront her father after they swam.
He was already on the deck when she walked out, poised to jump. The ladder was already lowered and she barely had any time to say a thing before he plunged in. She got splashed and she laughed, jumping in after him. The water was clear and the reef was colorful, also very shallow. There were many tropical fish swimming around, it was all very breathtaking...
