Millie
Three quick knocks on the front door echoed through the empty house, jolting me awake from all the way upstairs. Muffled voices came from behind it and with a knife in hand, I creeped my way through the house.
"Ginney Police!" The voice called more clearly now that I was near the door. The adrenaline in my system increased and made my toes numb. My heart dropped to the deepest pit of my stomach. I dropped the knife onto the couch to my left and slowly opened the door.
"Hello?" I asked as innocently as I could. I stared up at the tall men before me, hands intertwined behind my back.
"Is Mrs. Brown home?" The taller of the two with a mustache resembling an 1800's barber asked me. I shook my head.
"She's out of town, can I help with anything?"
"We're looking into the disappearance of Mr. Brown, your father. Would you know anything about that?"
My blood turned to ice and my vision faded in and out until I was no longer conscious.
Rose //
"No, I haven't seen him in a week or so. He got into a truck with some lady and packed bags and drove off." I answered. The shorter of the two nodded, small specks of dandruff falling from his golden locks. I forced myself to refrain from puking then and there.
"Do you know where he could have gone?" The shorter one asked, his name tag reading "Rogers." Again, I shook my head.
"Here's my card, contact my directly if you hear anything, Little Miss. we'll be placing a call with your mother to inform her that we were here and ask permission to search the premises tomorrow. Have a good rest of your night."
The two police men toddled down the steps from the front porch and into their much to small car for the size of the two of them. I shut the door and immediately climbed over to Sadie's.
-
"I need your help." I whisper-shouted to her as I crawled through the window. She sat up in bed and looked at me, puzzled.
"What do you need help with at 10 at night?" She rubbed her eyes, smudging the traces of mascara left from the day she hadn't bothered to remove.
"The cops. They were at my door, they were asking questions. My plan wasn't enough, they're still snooping around. Help me, please!" My heart was pounding and my mind was working to formulate my next plan.
"Slow down. Which one of you am I talking to right now?" She asked.
"Rose." I replied. She took a deep breath and began to speak again.
"Ok. Pack a bag. Do you know how to drive?"
"Do I know how to drive." I scoffed. "I've been driving for years, Sadie, of course I can drive." She stood up from her bed, tugging down her sleeping shorts that had ridden up, and walked over to her closet, grabbing a few bags.
"Pick two. One for food and water and money and anything you for whatever need to bring, the other for clothes and shoes. And underwear, please don't forget underwear." She began shoving clothes into one of the large bags, apparently disregarding the fact that the majority of them were becoming unfolded so the bag was filled with lose clothing.
"Actually," she stopped me before I could head out of the window. "Go downstairs to the kitchen and grab as many cans and shit from the pantry as you can. Anything that will last a long time. Got it?" I nodded and grabbed a pink Victoria's Secret duffle bag closest to me and crept down the stairs.
The unfamiliar kitchen was difficult to navigate, but the light from my phone worked just fine for a light. I filled the bag until it bulged and dragged me down from the weight. I hauled it up the stairs anyway, struggling to stay quiet. As I reached the top of the stairs I tripped, smacking into the wall to my right. I froze, waiting for a door down the hall belonging to either Mrs. Sink or Dacre to open any second, but neither did. Both stayed sealed and the respective owners were likely asleep.
"I won't leave tonight." I told her as I walked in. The police are coming tomorrow to inspect the property for any sign of him, and if they find the body then I'll run." I placed the heavy bag into her closet. "Until tomorrow." I said. Sadie smiled at me, the kind of smile that says more than words can. This one held comfort, sympathy. Understanding.
I walked towards the open window, but just before I could get a leg out of it, I walked back up to Sadie. She cocked a single perfect eyebrow up at me, confused as to what I was doing. I was confused myself, but determined nonetheless. "Thank you." I whispered.
I cupped her cheeks in my hands and connected our lips, savoring her taste. Her lips reacted immediately to my own, and her hands came up to tangle themselves into my curls. It wasn't our first kiss, technically. I had woken up from my own subconscious state to an intense make out session between her and Millie. But this was mine. I pulled away after what felt like an eternity that ended too son, breathing hard with pink cheeks. "That was from me. Not from Millie, not from anyone else. From me. For you. Because I have wanted to do that ever since I met you." And I slipped out the window.
-
When the police come tomorrow, they will find the body. I didn't dig that grave deep enough, any dog could sniff it out with ease. Tomorrow the body would be found and I needed to say good-bye.
"Millie, what are you doing here?" Finn asked sleepily, half hanging out of his bedroom window. I felt guilty for not giving her the chance to tell him goodbye, but I know Millie would want him to have something.
"I'm leaving tomorrow." I said. He furrowed his eyebrows, confused. "Things came up. I won't be back. Ever. I have to run. I need you to say goodbye to everyone for me."
"Where are you going?" He asked. His voice dripped with sadness as he looked at me.
"I don't know. Anywhere. Just not here. I could be back someday, under a new name or something. If the cops come knocking, you never saw me, okay?" He nodded his head solemnly. I turned in my heel and headed off his head.
"And Finn!" I called back from the sidewalk. "I may never have loved you romantically, but don't ever doubt that I love you."
