The leaves below Freya's feet crumbled to bits as she ran over them, the few that were spared lifting into the air, their flight cut short as they slammed against her torso. Her breath came out in ragged puffs, the clouds dispersing moments after being released from her mouth, but, despite her exhaustion, she kept running.
"That girl has been running for well over an hour," a voice whispered, the window before them clouding slightly as she spoke. "Should we say something...?" the man next to her shook his head, simply pressing his hand against the window and sighing.
"She does this every morning, it's best to leave her be," the man pushed himself away from the window, giving his thighs a quick pat before turning from the window and walking further into the house. Freya continued her run, her eyes following the leaves as they gently floated past her.
Returning her eyes to the path ahead, she noticed a small ray of sunshine peering over the village gate, her cue to stop her jog and coming to a stop, her shoes scraping against the pavement loudly. Pressing her fingers to her throat, she felt her pulse beating out of control, but her body turned its head to her nails digging into her own flesh.
I need to keep going; she scolded herself, her heart not pumping as fast as she needed it to in order to really feel something. With a heavy sigh, she lifted her fingers from her throat and gave her forehead a quick wipe, the sweat clinging to her hands as it traversed the flesh.
"Frey!" A voice called from the distance, the rising sun forcing Freya to squint to make out the body in the distance, "we're getting assigned today, don't be late!" With that, the body disappeared from view, the rays now piercing into Freya's eyes freely.
"Agh," a hand reached up and latched onto her shoulder, "you know... I can't keep up..." the voice gasped.
"If you can't keep up then you shouldn't become a ninja," she replied coldly, placing one arm in the other and pulling it up against her chest.
"You're so mean..." the voice whined, moving to face Freya, his golden eyes gleaming playfully, "I try to keep up, but you know running just isn't my thing..."
"Whatever," she dismissed him, releasing her arm and throwing her it into the air, folding the arm over her head and tugging with her free hand, "you could at least do stretches, Raiden."
"If it's anything like what you're doing, I'll pass," he chuckled, Freya's elbow bone rising slowly up her arm with each tug. "You're going to break something if you stretch that violently," he advised, averting his gaze as Freya glared at him.
"What do you know," she sighed, releasing her arm once more and letting it fall to her side, "let's get going, don't want to disappoint Emi now, do we?" Raiden shook his head, a very visible lump going down his throat at the thought of the girl, but Freya couldn't help but let out a sigh of relief at this oblivous man.
