Chapter 2

The phone rang four times before a gentle voice mumbled "Hello?"

"Hey, uncle John!"

"Uh- Madelyn? Y- yes! Hello!"

"Hi! How are you?"

"I'm perfect! How are you? How old are you now? What grade are you in?" He chuckled, "I'm sorry, we just haven't talked in so long!"

"I'm okay, I'm 19, and I'm not attending school at the moment."

"Wow! And why are you not in school?"

"Uh, that's- that's what I called you for."

The man on the other end cleared his throat, "What's happened?"

"Mum.. Mum and Dad are dead. They died last week."

John was silent.

"I'm so... So sorry, Uncle John. I should have told you earlier."

Maddy eyes started to fill with tears and her nose became runny.

The line was silent for what seemed like years.

"SHUT UP. OF COURSE I AM CRYING. MY BROTHER IS DEAD YOU ASS."

"What?"

"Oh, sorry." John sniffed, "My flatmate... He-"

"He? You have a boyfriend?!"

"NO-"

"Ooh! This made the mood so much brighter! What's his name?"

John sighed, "His name is Sherlock, and he is not my-"

"Oh, wonderful! Your relationship name is... Johnlock! Oh, that sounds awesome!!"

"No, stop. We are not dating!"

Maddy frowned, "Ugh. Johnlock sounds so good, though."

John groaned before getting back on topic.

"Is that all you called me for?"

"Oh, no. Can I, um, can I live with you? I have no other relatives near and-"

"Of course!" He exclaimed.

"G- great! I didn't think you would answer so quickly..."

"Okay, I'll buy you a one-way ticket to London and send it to you. It'll be booked for... The first of next month... The first of July!"

"Alright. Thank you, Uncle John! Thank you so much."

"Oh, it's nothing. Get packed! You have a week to say goodbye!"

Madelyn chuckled and hung up. Her uncles always brightened her day, no matter how dark it was before.

She grabbed a suitcase from the storage room and scrambled upstairs to pack.
