I lead Ben to the garage door of my house. Before we leave, I take one last look of my quaint household. My parents were the only ones who knew about Plan B, so they were expecting me to go at some point. Plan B is something all six of us came up with in the 7th grade. Amelia's mother's alcoholism was new at that point, yet we all knew it was sure to get worse. We all sat in a circle in John's treehouse and discussed what was to happen. We planned that we would leave Eureka in my parents' old school bus (my grandfather was a bus driver). We'd skip from small town, to small town for as long as we felt was right. Everyone was to save up a little bit of money to contribute. If the cops were after us, we were going to call our parents and let them know everything, but not until then. Not until we had to.
"Ready?" Ben asked, his grip on my hand tightening. I rip my eyes away from the family portraits hanging on the wall.
"Ready." We head out of the garage door and into my front yard where we walk to the large, rusty, faded-yellow school bus sitting near the side of my house. I pull my keys out of my pocket and pry the doors of the bus open, hopping in. "Ben, will you drive?" He remains standing in the grass out side of the bus. "Pleaseee??" I put on my best pouty face. He rolls his eyes and frowns,
"I guess, but only for you, my precious jewel." I fake gag at his pet name for me, but I pull him in for a grateful kiss.
"Thanks babe." I toss him the keys and he quickly hops into the bus.
"Did you bring the mix-CDs?" He says as he places himself in the driver's seat.
"How could I forget?" I chuckle and reach into my backpack, pulling out 3 different CDs. "Blue is Rock n Roll and music made before the 2000s, pink is Alternative and Indie Rock, and last but not least, green is rap." Ben laughs at that last part.
"I think I'll play the blue one." He pops the CD into the player and Pink Floyd erupts from the speakers. I lay back into a bus seat and say,
"Good choice, my main man. Now, put that key in the ignition and let's get this show on the road." Listening to my command, he sticks the key in and the bus starts up with a roar.
"Where to first?" Ben asks, looking at me through the mirror above his head.
"Twiggy's place."
