The strange thing is, Lance didn't feel anything. He heard the screams of his teammates, sure. That was a given. But even when he fell down and hit the metal floor, stained Maroon, he didn't feel anything. It was as if his whole body had just been given an anesthetic. Weird, huh?Lance thought it was weird. His eyes were glassed over, and hazy. He couldn't really see. His mind was fogged over as well. He couldn't remember why he was on the ground, why his teammates were screaming his name through the coms. He tried to say he was okay, but all that came out was a dark, thick liquid. It had a metallic taste, that he very much disliked.
"..Lance!?" A voice came through. He couldn't quite put his finger on who it was. Everything in his brain was a pile of mush. "Are you okay!?"
"Hah.. I'm- okay," He manages to say. Tears are running down his cheeks, and he doesn't know why.
"Where are you!?" The voice is now slightly more clear. It's Keith.
"Please- tell everyone I'm sorry..." He whispers. He starts to cough. Every bone in his body is now succumbing to the pain that was numbed a few minutes earlier.
"Shut up! Don't say that!" Keith screams. It sounds like he's distraught. But why would he be? He was Lance's 'arch enemy', right? He shouldn't care. Right?
"Tell everyone I- I love them.." With that, he hears multiple sobs.
"Lance! Please..!" Keith chokes. Lance smiles to himself. He did care. His vision starts to fade away. As if on cue, he suddenly is back with his family. They are beaming at him. Then he's at the Garrison, with Pidge and Hunk. Playing video games, like they did on Sunday's. Then he's in the castle, and a dizzy 10,000 year old space princess is in his arms. The picture whizzes by many memories with the whole team. But his heart warms at a certain one. The one where he's crying in Keith's arms. The thoughts that we're going through his head at the time were stupid. They're relationship didn't grow, at all. But still, the memory made him smile.
Alas, he was back in reality, still laying on the floor, now pushed slightly against a wall.
"Lance?"
"Promise me you won't come get me," he whispers. "I love you."
His vision decays and now he is in a dark space, only allowed to listen to his friends.
"Lance!?" It's Pidge's voice. "Lance can you- Can you hear me!?"
Then Shiro, "Lance wake up!"
And it goes on forever. Until a soft breeze flows through this dark place. He feels peaceful. The voices die down, and he closes his eyes, not knowing they were open in the first place.
He feels sleep overtake him. He knows he's dead. He knows it. But instead of being afraid, he embraces it.
The sharpshooter was gone.
The goofball was gone.
The seventh wheel was gone.
Lance McLain was gone.
