The father has never loved them, their mother was the one to take care of them and love them to the best of her abilities. She knew that without her they wouldn't have a good life,so when they turned 16 she had money put into a bank account under their names. A year before the story starts she gets diagnosed with pneumonia. After that the father became abusive towards them and made sure they knew he didn't love them. That is where the story starts. Brooklyn is adopted while Kaitlyn was born into the family. The mother adopted Brooklyn because she knew they were going to be mates.
