Mamé's POV
"So, how are you and Kenyana? Why didn't you bring him down here with you and my baby?" My mother spoke as she looked me in the eye.
"We're fine and no reason." I looked away from her and towards Karl, watching him play around with his toy cars along with one of my little cousins, Tylor.
"Mhmm." She eyed me.
"I'm serious! We're good, nothings wrong. Why?" I asked.
"No reason, just wanted to know. I mean, you haven't talked about how he's doing since you got here."
"He's fine, mama."
"Alright." She spoke.
After some silence, I sighed. "Ma, tell me if i'm being impatient or not." I spoke, getting her attention.
"With what?"
"Let me be honest. I don't want to be rude about it though."
"Just spit it out, you can tell me anything."
"Well, I just feel....I feel weird because Yatta hasn't asked me to marry him yet. I mean, we've talked about it so many times, and we've been together for 4 years now. We got a kid...I don't know. I've never talked to anyone about it, because I don't want to seem too pushy. But, I just felt like he wanted to marry me as much as I want to marry him. I don't wanna be just his baby mama." I sighed before taking a seat on the couch.
"Oh, baby." She say next to me. "How long have you been thinking like this?"
"I don't know. Way back when I was pregnant with Karl, I've always just been Yatta's baby mama. I never really thought much of it back then, but it just started to hit me when Porcha got engaged a couple months back. She just met that man, mama! Now she's getting married before I do." I spoke of my cousin, who for some reason always felt like the both of us were competing in everything we did. Even as we grew up.
"Excuse my French, and Lord please forgive me on this wonderful Sunday, but fuck that trick and her hating ass mama!" She started off, causing me to laugh.
"I'm being dead serious, Mamé. Forget her and her cheating ass fiancé. I know for a fact that Kenyana wants to marry you-"
"How do you know that, mama? Yea, we talked about it, but that's probably just to make me feel good. I'm starting to doubt that he truly wants to marry me."
"Don't do that, baby. All I know is he needs his own time, but he'll come around. I promise you."
"Alright, ma." I spoke, my mind was still heavy on the topic. Maybe I'm overreacting, but it's honestly just how I feel.
"It's so crazy that you brought this up." My mother smiled to herself as she shook her head.
"Why?" I asked.
"Nothing." She tried to hide her smile before speaking again. "We better head out now, the 11 o'clock mass starts in a little, since y'all made me miss the 9 o'clock one." She playfully rolled her eyes.
I laughed and shook my head. "Ma, you were the one who couldn't wake up on time."
"And I blame your father. If he didn't keep me up all night tryna f- nevermind."
