I realized I could hear a few conversations walking through the halls.
"Why is Zara talking to her?" One girl snickered.
"Who's the new chick?"
"She looks transgender."
"Why is Zara talking to the new chick?"
Finally Zara interrupted the very rude comments. "So! Aurora what are your classes?" Oops. I forgot all about what classes I had. "Uhm, one second." I say struggling to get out the schedule I had printed out from my counselor last night.
I finally managed to pull my schedule out of my bag and I hand it to her, she looks up, "We have a lot of the same classes! We have to go to the locker rooms first to get dressed for soccer, but just a warning the coach is a total witch. She only cares about her varsity favorites, which I am lucky to be one so lets just hope that you're good and she likes you." she says giving me an uneasy look. I can tell this class is going to be rough, probably not too bad because I played on varsity in Texas. "It shouldn't be too bad, I played back in Texas." I reply stuffing my schedule back into my bag and grabbing my high top cleats.
We stroll into the locker room and everyone immediately stops and glares at me beside Zara. Dang, this school really needs to chill. "Excuse me everyone! This is Jessica I expect you to treat her nicely, It's her first day so lets not make this harder on her." She says giving everyone glares back. If looks could hurt they would all be dead.
After Zara and I get dressed for practice we jog onto the practice fields. "Dawson! Get over here and set up the drills." Zara turns to me, "Good luck kid, I gotta go assist Satan." and with that she sprinted off leaving me alone and clueless. I follow the rest of the girls and start warming up, across the field I notice the boys practicing too. I eye one of them that has his shirt off. He looks my way and I immediately look down hoping he didn't see me gawking at his shirtless body.
"Jessica Anderson? Seems like we have a new student!" Coach turns from her roster to me. "Yes, I'm here, I just moved from Texas." I said a bit nervous. "Well, what are you waiting for. Show us what you can do so we can get you on a team." She says nodding towards the cones. One of the girls kicks me their ball and I dribble towards the cones. Okay Jessica lets try not to screw this up, focus.
I start sprinting through the cones, dribbling the ball back and forth between the tip of my feet. For a split second I can feel the coaches eyes burning into the back of my head. I go to turn back around and I nudge the ball too hard, losing control and kicking it a few feet away. I silently reprimand myself for getting distracted and I hear a few girls snicker, "Shes never going to make varsity with two left feet."
Angered, I continue and start to feel the rhythm, going twice as fast this time I get halfway back and coach stops me. "I've seen enough. Our varsity team doesn't need any more players." By the time she finishes her sentence I can feel the stinging of tears threatening to fall down my face. Great, I blew it. I already hate this coach. Instead of begging I say nothing and I pass the ball back to the girl.
"Okay girls this pathetic show is over, start your laps." Satan says with a devilish grin. I don't follow the girls as they begin running but instead I bend down to tie my laces that came undone while dribbling. "Anderson, get your ass up or you'll be running an extra mile." Coach says looking down at me with her clipboard in hand. I notice the name tag pinned to her shirt, Janis Tamsen.
I make sure to tie my shoe slower, standing up I look her in the eyes and start jogging after the girls. My jog turns into a full on sprint and I begin to pass some of the girls leaving them with surprised looks. I find Zara and I match her speed, "You were so right, she's a total witch!" She laughs and replies with an I told you so.
I sprint ahead of the group, running has always been my greatest strength. Running helps me concentrate and relax, no matter how bad of a mood i'm in I know I can always go for a run. All my problems seem to dissolve with each and every thud of my feet against the ground.
Without realizing it i'm almost finished, rounding near the boys practice field my eyes wander to the boy from earlier. Again he manages to look up and lock eyes with mine, this time I don't look away. Although I should have because I decide its a perfect time to trip over my own two feet and land onto my stomach. Ouch.
"Hey Anderson how about you watch where you're going!" I hear Coach Tamsen holler across the field. While I silently wish for her to get hit by a bus I hear a pair of footsteps running towards me, oh god. I look up and see it's the boy I've been gawking at for the entire practice, today just keeps getting better.
"Hey, are you alright?" he says offering a hand to help me up. I grimace as I take his hand, tingles running up my arm. I feel him tense and I laugh and say, "No, i'm Jessica, Jessica Anderson." His face relaxes and he smiles. "Nice one. i'm Declan, Declan Peterson." He says giving me an amused look. "Thanks Declan but I have to get going, my coach has it out for me. Maybe i'll see you around?" I say backing away before he could respond.
By some miracle I still manage to finish first, shortly after I finish Zara comes treading behind me. "Wow Jess, you have some legs on you. I've never met anyone to run faster than me, and that was with busting your ass in front of Declan!" She saying bursting into laughter. I can't help but burst into laughter too and soon we sound like diabolical villains laughing in sync.
The coach interrupts our evil laughter with, "Congrats Anderson, you have another shot at making varsity. We scrimmage tomorrow, don't make me regret this." and then she walks away. Zara comes up behind me and nudges my shoulder, "She must have been impressed with your mile time! Oh hey we should get dressed so we aren't late for second period." I glance behind me looking at the girls still trying to finish and then I walk inside wishing I had gotten Declans number.
~
Wow, I cant stand her coach. I wonder how she'll play in the scrimmage.
Anyways I hope ya'll enjoyed this chapter!
