"Allison!" I heard my mother call from downstairs. "Phone call!"
I got off my bed and walked across the carpeted floor of my room to the phone handset that was mounted on the wall I picked it up and pressed the answer button before putting the phone to my ear.
"Thanks mom," I said before hearing the click. "Hi, this is Allison Gaits."
"Hello Allison," I heard a man say on the other side of the line."I'm Mathew Holmstead. I heard that you babysit?"
"That's correct," I smiled as spoke.
"I have heard many great reports about your work quality, I have a job offer for you," he continued and I heard a desk drawer closed. "Since it the summer, that is a very busy time for me. I would like you to babysit my little Katie Monday through Friday from nine until five. Can you do that?"
"Sure!" I smiled as I wrote the information down on a notepad.
"And I will be paying you your amount which is?" he asked and I thought for a moment, trying to remember.
"Seven dollars and fifty cents per hour," I said as I wrote it down.
"Great!" he exclaimed. "My address is one three zero, Hunter's Lane. You start tomorrow."
"Got it," I laughed as I wrote down the address. "Thank you!"
"No, thank you." He said before hanging up.
This was gonna be great.
~*~*~
The next morning at 8:45 a.m., I tossed my backpack into my small Volvo, got in, and started to drive towards the Holmstead house.
In my backpack was a spare set of clothes for just in case, my phone, my charger, my list of emergency numbers, and stuff for me and Katie to do. I knew she was three so I packed the essentials for that.
When I pulled into the driveway, I looked at he paper to make sure I had the right address before getting out of the car. I arrived at the door at exactly 9:00 a.m. and I rang the doorbell.
The door opened to a man wearing a suit and tie and I immediately knew it was Mr. Holmstead. I opened my mouth to talk but he walked right past me, leaving the front door open. I watched as he walked to his car, got in, and drove away. Shaking my head, I entered the house.
"Katie?" I called as I moved through the house, settin my backpack on the floor and closing the door behind me. "Katie?"
"Bedroom!" I heard a tiny voice call in reply.
I walked upstairs and basically played a game of Marco Polo with the child as I tried to find her. When I did, I found her in the upstairs bedroom coloring on the floor on a piece of white paper.
"Hey Katie," I said sweetly as I sat next to her.
"Hi," she smiled up at me. "I drawing rainbows for you!"
"Oh thank you!" I laughed as she continued to draw.
This was going to be so easy.
