A short while after we first met I'd asked what he looked like.
"What color is your hair?" I'd asked him.
I heard him laugh before he responded, "Green."
I nudged his shoulder, "Come on, Owen."
"Fineee," he sighed, "It's light brown, almost blonde."
I smiled, "See, that wasn't so hard. What about your eyes?"
"Those really are green," a laugh escaped his lips.
"Green..? Give me an example." I could hardly remember the color, it's been years.
"Like..an avocado."
I laughed, and told him it was such an odd example. I had him explain everything about his physical appearance.
I needed to have some sort of image to match to his voice, considering I couldn't see him myself.

"Come on, Leah," Owen yelled up the stairs.
I heard him start to climb them and I grabbed my cane. I walked out of the doorway and made my way towards the steps. He met me at the top and helped me down.
"So where are we going?" I asked for the millionth time.
He laughed at my impatience, "Just wait, Lee."
We drove for about 10 minutes until he turned down the radio and spoke.
"I'm assuming you know what today is?" He sounded wary, like he was afraid to ask. We've been together almost a year, he knows it's fine.
"Yeah, I do. The anniversary of when I lost my sight."
It's been six years since my accident, so I was twelve at the time. My mother, father, and I decided to go out to dinner one night. It started raining heavily and a car swerved in front of us. I hadn't had my seatbelt on when we hit another car head on and I flew out of my seat and through the windshield. Both my parents died instantly and I left with head trauma and no vision.

I felt grass underneath my sandaled feet as Owen guided me somewhere unknown. The air was cool and I could feel the sun's warmth.
"Here we are," Owen whispered in my ear.
"Where? Tell me, Owen," I whined impatiently.
He laughed at my complaints and whispered again, "Reach out, Leah."
I did, and I felt a cool, smooth surface. I moved my hands down the canvas and felt what I was looking for. A small tray carrying brushes and bottles of paint.
I turned to Owen and hugged him tightly. I hadn't painted since I lost my eyesight.
I grabbed the brushes, whichever felt right, and asked Owen to tell me the colors.
I painted him, as I imagined he'd look, from feeling his features and what he's told me.
I was always told, "Paint what is most beautiful to you, something you cherish," and that's what I did.
I let the brush guide me as I felt drops on my cheeks. I thought it was rain until I realized my eyes were wet.
Owen wiped the tears away and kissed me.
"I love you, Leah."
"I love you too."
