Chapter 6

"So?" Heatherwhisker scoffed. "What now? Were would Rowan even be? We've been distracted by nonsense from Moon, so we lost his scent."

"I'm not sure. Let's just try to pick it back up." Rivermist meowed.

Then all of a sudden the cats heard Puddlejump burst out laughing. He was laughing at cat footprints in the mud.

"Wow! Puddlejump is a genius! He found Rowan's pawprints!" Flamelight exclaimed.

"I am?" Puddlejump said seriously.

Now that they had a lead, the cats followed the scent trail in search of Rowan and Icepaw.

Moon followed the path they had come from all the way back to her den. She breathed a sigh of relief. Finally! Back home. She padded up to her den but didn't go inside. The whole forest seemed silent. There wasn't laughing or joking from other cats or Puddlejump making dumb comments. Just silence. Moon looked around expecting something to happen. Nothing. Well nothing I can do now. I'm home just where I belong. She curled up in her nest, her tail wrapped around herself. The icy silence made her shiver. I wonder if they miss me right now... I doubt it. I'm sure even Rivermist forgot about me. They wanted me to go despite the fact I helped them! Moon decided to rest and hopefully when she woke she wouldn't remember the journey to the rogue barn at all.

Moon padded through the forest happily. Birds chirped and forest animals chittered. She approached a thick forest. The same one that Rowan lived by. I'm not going back there! I'm over it. She decided to go around the trees. Mud covered the ground she could see pawprints from multiple cats. She sniffed them. She recognized that scent! Rivermist and the others have been here! She followed the paw prints for awhile. Until she reached a strange twoleg nest. The place was eerie and empty. She could hear yowls coming from an abandoned house. Rain began to fall. The rain was heavy and thunder began to echo around the place. Moon ran into the twoleg house and to see cats fighting. To her shock she saw all her friends fighting the rogues. Heatherwhisker struggled as Ice pinned her down, but that wasn't the only thing she saw. She saw a dark cat standing next to Ice. A dark gray tom with light blue (almost white) eyes. She didn't know how but she instantly knew his name. Wolfclaw. The shadowy cat ripped out Heatherwhisker's neck. Moon let out a shout of horror. She tried to fight off Ice and Wolfclaw but as soon as touched them they disolved away like mist. Puddlejump! Hare broke open his empty skull. Next to Hare and shadow cat stood. It was Frog! That meant Frog was a shadow 'friend' too. Then she saw Flamelight and Pebblestorm being attacked by Robin and Jasper. Next to the rogues stood two cats. One of them had black fur covered in white spots, Darkfang, and the other had creamy colored fur with black spots and had sharp amber eyes, Roseshade. NO. Rivermist! Rivermist was flanked by Rowan and two shadowy cats. Rowan leaned close to her his claws on her neck. Rivermist couldn't move but her eyes were begging. Please. Rowan tightened his grip. Blood leaked from her neck and pooled onto the ground. Rivermist let out a small croak. Her last words...

"Moon." Then Rivermist fell dead. Moon rushed forward trying to save her friend but she disappeared just as Heatherwhisker had. The only thing that remained were the shadow cats. They stared at Moon their eyes full of vicious. So many shadow cats. Everywhere. One thing stuck out though. Two shadow cats caught her eyes. A flame colored tom with dark blue eyes and a black she-cat with a white belly and muzzle and green eyes. Flamingstride. Fallenangel. All of the shadow cats surrounded her now.

"Join us Moon. You belong here." They breathed, their voices now more than a whisper. Like a whispered carried on a breeze. They seemed right next to her as they spoke.

"Follow the shadows. FOLLOW THE SHADOWS." They chanted.

Moon gasped. She opened her eyes and frantically looked around. She trembled from the memory of the dream. Her friends, the shadow cats! Was that dream true? Of course not! That's silly. Besides, if she did come back how could she help? One cat couldn't make a difference when there were so many shadow cats. So many rogues. The morning sun shone down on her fur as she yawned and came out of her den. Despite the sunshine the forest ahead of was dark. So eerie. Then it came to her. I need to help them. How could I leave them in danger? They know nothing about the shadow cats! I need to warn them before it's too late. She began to run off down the winding path towards the dark trees. Follow the shadows, Moon. Follow the shadows.
