Prologue:

I skittered through the deserted streets of Exilis. Shadows shuffled anxiously in the dark alleys, between the small huts. Exilis was always empty, the Pax lived in fear. I approached a large golden gate, beyond its barbed wire I could see the tall white spires of the castle. They contrasted with the violet hues of the night sky. I slowed to a walk, giving the guards time to recognize me. They did, and hurriedly let me in without a word. I ran through the gates and into the royal garden. Its breathtaking beauty gave me no comfort as my mind reeled at the news I was to give. I heaved open the large double doors. My gaze fell on the king. His snow white skin became even paler than possible at the sight of my nervous face. I stopped in front of his throne.

"Your majesty." I bowed

"Yes?" his left brow rose higher on his smooth chiseled face. There was a mysterious beauty to him. He seemed to hold himself with an aura of dignity and pride.

"I just saw the oracle. It told me that a boy and girl will be born of enemies. On their seventeenth birthday they will unite and rule the Otherworld as one. All equality will be restored. The boy is your son, Gavin, and the girl is one of the Pax" I paused "they will overthrow you."

I looked up to his face. All the beauty I had seen moments before was gone. It had been replaced with a fiery rage. His lips thinned into a line, and his hands began to shake with uncontrollable fury.

"I won't allow it!" the king rose from his throne "my son will not overthrow me."

"Your majesty" I mumbled "it is in the prophecy."

"NO!" he bellowed "the Pax will stay in Exilis."

"But sire, this is their land." I reasoned

"SILENCE!" the king's face furrowed in frustration. "GUARDS!"

Ten burly men with spears strapped to their backs walked into the room.

"I want you to go to Exilis. Kill all of the female Pax under the age of two. If one is left I will kill you personally."

"But-"the king raised a hand, silencing me.

"Go now!"

The guards left with a chorus of "yes sir's". The king then turned to me, his best friend and royal advisor, with a pained look on his face. In all of the years we have been friends, I have never seen him this pained, not even when his wife died.

"My son," he said "take him to the human world-"

"NO!" I cried "don't do this!"

"I have to." He looked exhausted. Realizing how far he had gotten from his throne, he walked back and sat down with a sigh. "My son cannot meet this girl. I refuse to be overthrown by my own son. Let alone give the Pax their land!" he paused I could see him trying to calm down "please' he whispered "if you really are my friend, you'd do this for me"

I nodded and went down the corridor to Gavin's chambers. My mind raced at the tragedy happening just outside the palace walls. It was as if I could hear those babies scream as they were slaughtered. I mentally shook my head, ridding myself of those horrible thoughts. I opened the door to Gavin's room, to see him sleeping peacefully in his crib. I gathered him up into my arms, my long brown hair tickling his cheek. He smiled in his sleep, his skin as flawless and smooth as his father's. He had gotten his curly brown hair and grey eyes from his mother. I stepped out into the dark night. Running, I reached the outskirts of Exilis in record time. I made my way the portal. Only the people of this world could see its true form. The men guarding the portal let me through with hardly a glance. I came out on a deserted street in what humans would call suburbia. I walked up to the first house. It was decently sized with a nice front yard. Looking into the window, I could see that these people seemed nice enough. I used my power to sense the couple's true intentions, and only found kindness. I looked down at the sleeping form in my arms, then back at the couple in the window. A single tear slid down my face

"Gavin" I whispered "this will be your new home. They will take care of you. It's okay, we will visit you. You will always be prince. I love you. Goodbye"

I leaned my head down and kissed his forehead. He smiled in his sleep and yawned. Gently, I placed him on their porch, rang the doorbell and ran. I didn't look back, knowing that if I did, I would have taken Gavin. My breathing became heavy; I stopped two blocks away from Gavin's new home and sat down. Bathed in the glow of a streetlamp I put my head in my hands and wept.
