Chapter 10
It didn't take Megan long to feel at home in the Madden-Diaz household. She had far more freedom than she had ever had and more time to play. And even more things to play with. But less people to share it with, although the last part didn't bother Megan much. She knew that she would meet Joel's kids soon and that there were other kids to meet as soon as she started school. So for now, she just enjoyed having things for herself for the first time since she could remember (except for Dog, of course, but he was the only thing she ever really owned).
Benji and Cameron did their best to make her feel welcome and they were succeeding. Although she still wouldn't call them Mom and Dad to their faces, they knew she was using those names to talk about them with the other parent. Benji was wondering why she would still use their names to address them, but didn't want to ask her just now. As she was only adjusting to her new situation, this might be too much to ask for.
Right on the next morning after the incident during the night, they had bought her a night light to plug in in the hallway, so there was always some light shining through the open door of her room, but they didn't have to leave on the whole ceiling lights.
Cameron wasn't too keen of her listening to rock music while trying to fall asleep. She thought it wouldn't give her a peaceful sleep with the fast music playing. Benji couldn't talk her out of it and so he decided to ask Megan about her favorite songs and did an acoustic version of them just for her. He even asked Joel to join him and the twins recorded her favorite songs, calling the CD "Megan's lullabies" as they handed it to her. She had hugged them tight and kissed both of them on the cheek, thanking them over and over again. Even Cameron approved of the quieter songs and from then on Megan would listen to her special record every night.
Nymeria had accepted Megan as part of her pack right away and barely left her side. During the nights she would rest on the turquoise rug and keep an eye on the little girl. The other animals got used to her as well but were not as clingy as Nymeria was. Danzig, the cat, had snuggled into Megan's lap for the first time on the third day. Before that, the Bengal cat could only be seen from the other side of a room.
"He needs some time to adjust to new things.", Benji had told her and so she waited and finally got her reward. Danzig's fur was fluffy and soft and she loved stroking her hand all over his back and down his tail.
During the late evenings, when Megan was already in bed, Benji and Cameron talked about the past hours and shared their thoughts on their new found parenthood.
"I wonder why she is so scared of the dark.", Benji mumbled one time while they were already in bed and had just turned off the lights in their bedroom.
Facing him, Cameron wrapped her right arm over his torso and rested her head on his chest.
"A lot of children are afraid of the dark. As soon as the lights are off your hearing gets sharper because your eyes don't work as good and that's when you start to hear sounds that didn't register before. The surroundings are also still new to her."
She kissed the part of his chest where her face was laying on and looked back up at what she could see from his face in the dark of their bedroom.
"Or do you think there is another reason?"
Sighing Benji rested his hand on her back and gently massaged her with his fingertips.
"I'm not sure.", he admitted. "But she once told me about a dark chamber and it seemed like she wasn't allowed to talk about it. She let it slip when she was fearing she would fail your task of getting me and when I asked her about it, she said that it's forbidden to talk about it."
Cameron froze lightly.
"Do you think they put the children in a dark room to punish them?"
Benji shrugged lightly but Cameron could still feel it.
"I don't have any evidence, but it almost looks like it."
Biting her lip Cameron wondered if Benji was on to something.
"Maybe we should report it?", she whispered.
"And risking to lose Megan because the adoption is not through? No way!"
He pulled his wife closer to him and kissed her.
"But we might have to say something later on. From what Megan told me, there might also be hitting at the orphanage and that is clearly forbidden."
The woman nodded and rearranged her body so she was resting comfortably on top of her husband now.
"But we'll wait until the ink has dried.", she agreed.
They changed the subject and talked about what they had done today. The clock turned to midnight and one thing led to another as the night heated up. They got lost in the passion for each other while their bodies tangled together, embracing each other quietly in the darkness of the room.
