Another day of school. I'm currently in biology with my friend Marina and honestly I don't understand anything. Surprise, surprise. I look at the clock, ten minutes until break. I look over at Marina she's writing initials all over her page, presumably the initials of the guys she likes.
I look around the class and see the same people that I see day in, day out. The same people who are always homophobic to me, mean to me for being extremely tall and the fact I wear glasses and also because I'm pale. I mean I'm British I'm not going to have a naturally dark skin like Marina, with her Nigerian descent, has and in any case there'll all pale too they just cover it with thick layers of fake tan.
I guess I've always been a kind of outsider, whether it's my height that scares people or my lack of social skills and confidence or maybe I just give off weird vibes. But I have been very lucky in finding great friends with Marina, Jo and Frances. Pamela and Natasha are nice too.
I just want a change, I just want away from people who judge me, I just wish there was somewhere I could go and be wholly myself and happy.
I look at the clock again, five minutes to the bell and I feel a tap on my shoulder I turn around and I see Ethan Jackson sitting there with his girlfriend Molly McLaughlin beside him, she is giggling furiously.
"Do you want to kiss my girlfriend, Cindy?" He asks mockingly "D'you want her to be your girlfriend?"
"Ew no! She's like ten feet tall plus she's specky." Squeals Molly through her giggles
The pair laugh and I roll my eyes and look back at my jotter. I know that it's best to just ignore them.
Marina gently touches my shoulder and says "Just ignore them Cindy. I know it's hard but eventually they'll get bored of it and leave you alone. And anyway 6"2 is a cool height I think your glasses are nice."
"Thanks Marina," I reply. It's easy for her to say that though, she's pretty, long legs, her hair is in twists and she has dark eyes and big lips. I wish I could be like her.
I hear Ethan and Molly say my name again but I ignore them. At last the bell rings, Marina and me grab our stuff and head outside. We walk towards the big tree where we go every break, Frances and Jo are already there.
"Hi Fran! Hi Jo!" I say as cheerfully as I can.
They can obviously tell that I'm not completely happy as Jo asks "Were Ethan and Molly giving you trouble again?"
"Yeah, but it's just the usual stupid stuff." I reply
"You shouldn't have to put up with that, Cindy. You should do something about it." Frances says seriously.
"It's fine, I'm used to it."
Jo shakes her head "You shouldn't have to be used to it! You should-"
She stops talking as Pamela and Natasha come over. They're both nice and kind and I consider them my friends but we're not that close that I can confide in them.
"Hiya you lot!" Pamela says brightly "How are we all?"
Before anyone can reply Natasha says "How's the magic going?"
Marina pulls a confused face "What?"
"Don't pretend you don't know! We're on to you Marina Zelaway and all of you." Pamela says jokingly
Natasha nods "Yeah we know your secrets."
Then they walk away. They're always joking about how we apparently do magic and go to Hogwarts it's quite funny sometimes.
"Wingardium leviosa." Laughs Fran
"I still don't get it." Marina says in a confused voice
"Bless you Marina and your 'I don't understand Harry Potter self' it's brilliant." Jo smiles
They all laugh. I turn around and the is a light purple streak just floating there in midair and there is a yellow light around it. I don't know what it is or how it got there but I can't stop myself from going to see it. It looks like a tear in the air, I reach out a hand to touch it when Fran shouts on me "Cindy what are you doing?"
I turn around and the other three are standing behind me.
"Don't touch it." Jo says seriously
"Why? What is it?" I ask
"I don't know but I don't think you should touch it, it might be dangerous."
I laugh "It's a floaty purple thing in the sky, it's not going to blow me up."
Jo shakes her head as if to say do as you like and again I raise my hand and touch it. My hand disappears. The others scream and so do I and I pull my arm away but my hand is still on my arm. I stare at my friends in disbelief. Nobody says anything, they just stare at me and I at them. I decide to touch it again. Again my hand goes through but it doesn't come out on the other side, I can feel the sun on it but it is rather a dull day today. The tear gets bigger, big enough for my whole body to fit through, I don't know why but I close my eyes and walk through it. I hear the others scream and I open my eyes. I'm not in school anymore I'm in a meadow with lots of flowers, the sun shining and a sign with an arrow saying 'Elendor 1/2 mile'.
I seem to have stumbled upon another world!
