It had been a year since my parents died. I had been in several different foster homes, and I knew everyone at the center. If I was adopted, they said congratulations, but they knew I would be back. I'm 16 years old, no one wants to adopt someone that old. I've been trying to be a good kid and deal with my new parents but it never lasts.

At the center I have my own little room, it's small but just big enough to fit a small bed and dresser. I don't have much, just a few pairs of skinny jeans, some shorts, tank tops and t shirts, and a pair of dirty, black converse. I have a phone, the center gave it to me, I have a few numbers but no one I would ever actually call, but I keep it with me just in case. I live in Phoenix, Arizona, it has the tendency to get over 100* sometimes. I don't have any friends, just the people I talk to every once in a while at the center, but they change all the time.

I was being taken in today by a fairly rich family, I was determined to stay.

"Congratulations, Maxine," a small boy said to me as he hugged my legs.

"Thank you," I replied.

I took a deep, shaky breath and walked out of the doors to my new family. just a woman and man, no children. We said our hellos and got in the car and drove away. I stared out the window with my bag packed with the few things I owned.

"Sweet heart, do you want to go shopping when we get home and get you settled in?" My new mum said to me.

"Sure," I replied quietly.

After that quick conversation we dropped "dad" off at his work, he had weird work hours. then me and "mum" went to the mall, we went to all the coolest shops and since I was in a fairly rich family now I got lots of stuff from my new favorite store, Hot Topic. I got t shorts of movies I used to watch when I was little, band shirt of the music I listen to, bracelets, and lots of tank tops, skinny jeans and shoes. even if it had only been a few hours, I really enjoyed my mum, she was really sweet and very interested in my life before my parents death.

We then left the mall and headed home to make dinner. when we pulled up the drive way I looked out the window in astonishment, the house was more like a mansion! I opened the car door and grabbed all my bags, my mum led me inside and up two flights of stairs, I had my own room on the third floor, there was an extra bedroom up here other than my own room, I had a full bath and a small balcony. there was a present on my bed, I set it to the side to open it later and started hanging up my clothes.

My mum walked in and smiled, glad to see me getting settled in. A cat walked in behind her and walked cautiously over to me and laid on my lap as I was sitting on the bed. Mum laughed, I felt at home for once, I loved it.

When I was all finished putting everything away, I walked around my floor and then back down stairs. while I was walking down the stairs I could smell pasta and garlic bread, it smelled so amazing, it had been a while since I've had it.

When dad got home we all sat down and enjoyed the meal. Dad asked me lots and lots of questions. when we finished I helped mum clean up and washed dishes. When we were done I excused myself and went up to my room.

There I found two cats, one from before and a new one, both were very friendly though. I decided to shower quickly and went to bed where the cats curled up with me. I start my new high school tomorrow... I'm nervous as hell.
