Arashi repeated what seemed to be his two new favorite words. But this time they came out shaky. "I know."
"How will we get out?" Kasai stared at her paws. "We can't hide here any longer. We'll starve."
Arashi shrugged. "Well, we can't go out the way we came in."
"That's obvious," Kasai huffed. She glanced above her at the cracks in the ceiling. Instantly, an idea formed in Arashi's mind. The cracks were tiny, but it was likely that the stone in that area was weaker than the stone around it. Meaning, if they could somehow break away the stone...
"Grab a rock!" Kasai exclaimed, chiming with Arashi's thoughts. He grabbed a stone in his jaws. Tossing his head, he flung the stone up to the ceiling, slamming it against the cracks.
Tiny bits of rock chipped off, bouncing off of the cave floor below. Kasai joined in, flinging rocks at the cracks. Arashi figured it took about a million rocks, but finally the breach was large enough to fit a young husky.
"Here," Arashi knelt, allowing Kasai to step on his shoulders. Arashi then pushed up and Kasai jumped, clearing the breach. "Yes!" she nearly howled with joy as her paws touched snow again.
"Don't forget me!" Arashi called up to Kasai, stomping his feet.
Kasai peered down. "How do I get you out?"
"I'll jump, just be ready to grab me!"
Kasai readied herself. Arashi crouched, then leaped, his paws brushing hers. Kasai caught him and hauled him up beside her. His chest heaved as he panted. "New problem." He flicked his tail towards the polar bear, who had spotted them. It was lumbering towards them, quickening its pace with every step.
Kasai grunted, but went limp as Arashi weakly grabbed her by the scruff and tried to run with her in his grasp.
He dropped her after a couple steps, and she wailed. "Just run, we aren't strong enough! Go! Go!"
Arashi huffed as he bolted away, checking back to make sure Kasai was close behind every couple seconds. He spotted a thicker area of twigs ahead, which would be ideal to hide in, but as he looked behind him he realized the bear was gaining on Kasai, whose short legs were no match for the bear's long stride.
WHUMP! In a flash of legs and tail, his nose met a snoutful of snow. He sputtered and tried to climb to his feet, noticing that his paw had been caught in a jutting rock. Fearfully he glanced behind him as Kasai rushed to his side. "Come on, come on!"
A growl behind him sent shivers down his spine. He shuddered as the polar bear advanced, a threatening growl seeming to shake the woods. Arashi slowly got to his feet, backing up as the polar bear walked forward. He tried to shield Kasai, who shot him a glare and pushed up beside him, batting him reassuringly with her tail.
He knew by the look in her eyes; If we go down, we go down together.
The polar bear leapt forward, long claws slashing at Kasai's side. She barely managed to dodge, awkwardly rolling into a snowbank as the claw took out tufts of red fur.
Arashi scrambled away as the polar bear snapped his jaws near his head, and a moment later a pain in his ear pricked his senses. Cold liquid seeped through his fur, and a wave of panic washed over him.
