Without You

Landon was excited. His heart threatened to soar through his chest and fly onwards, forever. His chocolate brown eyes stared back at him as he gazed at his reflection. He had a clear skin tone that practically glowed. His dirty blonde hair stood up in small, wild clumps, and perfectly matched his bright, daring personality. He was good looking, he had to admit. Even though he rarely felt it, when he did it was always with Rhea. She made him feel right.

Rhea was his girlfriend and was beautiful. She had short, wavy auburn hair that was so glossy, and always felt....cool and cold. Landon paused. Was he turning into a freak? A sleek hair lover freak? He shook away this thought. Rhea had dark blue eyes that bore into his very soul.

Okay...That made it certain. He was a freak. But he was freak that was in love. He quickly scrawled a note for her and put it in his pocket.

As he drove to her house, he paused. He had forgotten to lift the flowers he bought for her. With a light shrug, he figured she could get them tomorrow. He stood on her porch and rapped on her polished white door.

After a moment, the door opened and there she stood. She was wearing a light blue tank top and a pair of black skinny jeans. Her bright yellow scarf matched her yellow converse. She smiled timidly as he broke into a massive grin. She took his hand and they got inside his blue Nissan.

"You look beautiful." he breathed, with an enormous smile.

She glanced at him and then looked down.

They drove away and he saw Rhea fidget slightly.

“You okay, Ree?” he asked, his voice laced with concern. She would have normally been bubbling away at something amusing and random.

“I’m fine Landon” She said, slight irritation in her voice. She must have realised, so she said “Really” in a softer tone.

The awkward silence hung between them and although many times Landon had tried to pick up a conversation, she avoided looking at him and answered in a one or two worded reply. It was like Rhea was playing a ‘Try and answer in the shortest possible way!’ game.

After a while, she lightly touched his arm. He immediately softened up, as he had been tense.

“Land can we pull over? I- I want to talk.” She murmured quietly.

Landon drove up to the pavement and parked beside it. His car groaned.

“Yeah Ree?” he asked, his voice filled with love. It made her stomach drop.

“Um...Well” She paused for a slight moment.

“Landon, I-I don’t think it’s working any more. My feelings...they’ve...changed.” She said, keeping her head bowed. After he hadn’t replied, she looked up, her eyes looking into his deep, dark eyes.

She could see a single tear roll down his cheek as he looked down into his lap. He didn’t say a word. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a note. As he put it into her hand, he looked into Rhea’s eyes. She could see the pain behind them.  His big thumping heart that he had an hour ago just throbbed with despair.

Then, it all went so very fast.

There was a drunk driver speeding down the street, in a Black Honda. The driver swerved and as if in slow motion, he crashed into the driver’s seat.

Miraculously, Rhea had survived. She saw Landon’s almost in half body. He took in a raggedy breath and looked at her. There was still adoration in his eyes, even after what she had done. He whispered croakily...” I will always love you”. And then he was dead.

Rhea quickly remembered the note and fumbled with it. She opened it up slowly and read:

Without Your love, I would die
