I shake my head, trying to get rid of the thoughts echoing in my mind, but it's no use. Instead, I slowly walk outside and get another box to take up to my room. When I catch sight of the broom, a chill runs down my spine and I decide to hurry and unpack everything so I can shower and forget today.
Finally, after what feels like an eternity, I manage to lug every box labelled "Rose" we had packed into the truck. Dad is finishing reassembling my bed when I drop the last one on the floor.
"Hey Rosy, is that everything?" He asks, wiping the sweat from his forehead.
"I hope so." I sigh, pushing a box from the middle of the path.
"Perfect, your bed is all put together. Now I'm going to go work on ours." He puts all of his tools back into his work bag and carries it down the hall with him.
I cut open the box that contains my bedding, and slowly put my bed back into order. Once I have every blanket and throw pillow neatly arranged, I grab my pajamas and walk across the hall to my bathroom.
The steam from the shower quickly fills the room, making everything foggy and humid. I strip down and toss my dirty clothes into a corner on the floor, pulling my hair from it's grungy ponytail. The hot water cascades over my body and I sigh in relief when my tired muscles begin to relax. I hum lightly as I wash my hair, the shampoo covering my eyes.
A loud noise comes from just outside the shower door and I jump, immediately freezing in the spot I'm standing. "Mom?" I call, hoping she needed a spare towel. I quickly wash the suds from my eyes and look out the door, only to be met with an empty room. I figure it must have been something falling over in one of the cabinets and brush it off, continuing to rinse the shampoo from my hair.
"Nice ass" Someone remarks, startling me so much I slip and fall on the ground.
"What the hell?" I call out, ripping the shower door open to confront whoever managed to get into my bathroom.
The room is still empty, however, so I grab a towel to wrap around my body and investigate the window. When I look out onto the roof below, no one is there, leaving me dumbfounded. "Hello?" I call again, prepared to knock the lights out of someones eyes if I find them.
I quickly dress in my pajamas and walk out into the hallway, meeting my father by the stairs. "Dad, is someone else here?"
"No, why? Did you see someone?" He asks, setting his bag down.
"Someone was talking while I was in the shower." I explain, feeling the cold water in my hair slowly soak into my shirt.
"What?" He asks, storming down the hall to find whoever is here. I follow right behind him and check every nook and cranny in my area of the house. When we come up empty handed, we go back downstairs in defeat. "You're sure you heard someone?"
"Yeah, positive. First I heard a loud bang like something fell, then they were talking to me."
"Maybe it was a TV, Rosy, I can't find anyone." He says, rubbing his eyes with his dirty hands.
"Yeah, maybe..." I mumble, wondering if this house is making me go insane.
