Chapter Two
I let out a sigh as I made my way to my 1996 Ford F-150. The sun was already setting, but I always made sure to park under a light. I also always made sure I parked near ROTC so I could quickly leave once practices were over. Practices ran late today and of course I had to stay later than most students so I could lock everything up. As soon as I locked everything up, the instructors left, leaving me behind to walk to my truck alone. Only a few other cars scattered across the parking lot, but most of them were close to the other side of the lot.
I opened my door and shoved my backpack into the backseat. Once I was inside, I started my truck and plugged my phone into the aux cord. Music blared through the shitty speakers and I put my truck in reverse. I came to a screeching halt when someone ran up to the back of my truck. I spun around in my seat and stormy grey eyes stared back at me. I couldn't process what was happening until Jaxson ran over to my passenger side door and pulled on it, trying to open it.
"Unlock the door!" He yelled. I couldn't do anything except stare at him, my eyes wide in fear. I had no clue why Jaxson Knight wanted in my truck and why it looked like he just ran a mile. Was he going to make me disappear after challenging him in the cafeteria?
The sound of gunshots pulled me out of my thoughts and I looked out of the driver side window to see two people running towards us. Pistols were in both of their hands and one of them stopped to point the gun towards my truck. My body and mind finally kicked into action and I unlocked the doors. Jaxson didn't waste any time to get into the truck, slamming the door shut behind him.
"Go!" This time I listened to him and go the hell out of there. My tires squealed as I peeled out of the parking lot. I flinched as I heard bullets hit my truck, but a minute later I was finally out of their range. I didn't slow down, though, and continued to haul ass until I made it into town. My eyes constantly looked through the rearview mirror, making sure we weren't being followed. Just as I was about to pull over, I could see a Subaru BRZ weaving in and out of traffic. Instead of pulling over, I took the first left turn, only to see them take the same turn. I cursed under my breath when I realized they were quickly gaining on us. My eyes flicked over to see Jaxson had his body turned to look back, a grim look on his face.
"I won't be able to beat them in my truck," I told him, but it was clear he already knew that. While the BRZ only had 206 horsepower, it was light and definitely wasn't slow. While my truck was well maintained, it was also 20 years old and was a truck. It was heavy, old, and slow as fuck.
"Go to Escalera Ranch," Jaxson ordered. I didn't argue with him and instead took a hard right. My rear end swung out but thankfully my truck stayed on all four tires. I watched was the BRZ took the turn with ease, staying right on my ass. I could faintly hear Jaxson on the phone, talking in a low voice. My focus was on the road and the sports car behind us so I didn't care enough to listen to Jaxson's conversation. I especially didn't care to listen when I saw the light in front of me turn red. I bit my lip as I scanned the intersection to see if I could make it without getting in a wreck. I smiled slightly when I saw that an 18 wheeler was turning left onto the road. I pressed down on the gas all the way and flew through the intersection, barely making it on time in front of the 18 wheeler. I looked behind me to see that the BRZ didn't make it in time and had to slam on their breaks and swerve to avoid hitting the trucker. A full grin broke out on my face at my victory. I was impressed with myself that I was able to do that, especially since I had never been in a high speed chase before. It was thrilling.
"Impressive."
The grin slipped from my face when Jaxson spoke up. I glanced at him from the corner of my eyes to see that he was staring at me, a smirk plastered on his face. I turned my attention back to the road and I didn't dare slow down as I made my way back out of town. I soon turned into Escalera Ranch and I listened to Jaxson as he gave me directions to I'm assuming his house. It didn't take long before I came to a stop in front of a house that was probably double, if not triple the size of the house I lived at. It was fucking ginormous. The driveway made a circle in front of the all brick house. No other house was in sight, meaning they probably owned quite a bit of land. That wasn't a surprise since they were filthy rich. They literally owned almost the whole town and they made sure everyone knew that.
