I wish I could have enjoyed the Isle of Man, it really was beautiful, but the noise in my head wouldn't go away. I spent most of my time curled in a ball on my bed.
Several days in, I felt a call from Gregory. I grabbed my cloak and went to join him.
"Things are going down," Gregory told me when I appeared near him. "Put on your cloak."
Gregory led me into the middle of a huge group of Reapers. They were all mumbling about souls being everywhere, but that they wouldn't reap anyone.
My head was about to explode with all the noise in it, so I couldn't make sense of anything that was being said.
Which was fine, because a huge fight broke out.
Fists were flying everywhere, and I reached into my cloak for the dagger that I carried for such occasions. I could kill a Reaper with the vials that I carried, but I could also kill one with the dagger in my hand.
I wanted the dagger, because it would be more of a show.
All around me there was death. Reapers slaying Reapers, and I had no idea who any of them were because all of us were wearing our hoods.
That's when I saw Death walking through the devastation. That was also when I saw a Reaper, who turned out to be Gregory, remove his hood and walk over to Death.
Then stab him.
I didn't know our daggers also worked on Death himself, but down he went.
Gregory turned to me and grinned.
All thought left my head. I gripped my dagger tighter, and walked over and plunged it into his chest, killing him instantly.
"Well, now what?" Luc said from behind me. "I need a new Death."
"This is a mess," Michael walked up beside him.
I turned and faced the brothers.
They were smiling.
"You two orchestrated this, didn't you?" I pointed my dagger first at one, then the other. Even if I stabbed them right in the heart, it wouldn't do anything to them.
Heartless bastards.
"Why would you ever think that?" Luc said with a straight face. It would have to be him. Michael couldn't lie, and Luc could do it all day. "We would never want to lose our Death."
"Guess it'll have to be you now," Michael walked over and took something off of Death. It was his dagger. "You killed the killer, so it falls to you."
"And if I don't want it?" I crossed my arms over my chest.
"Death is a fact of life," Luc moved closer to me. "It's going to happen. And either you put together a new band, or Mike and I do it."
"Don't call me Mike," Michael grumbled. "You know I hate it."
"Which is why I do it," Luc winked at his brother. "This has been discussed with Father. You become Death, and we can go back to the way things were."
"You think I'll take the two of you back?" I grabbed Death's dagger. One that could hurt the brothers. Not kill them, but hurt them. Death was, after all, one of the Four Horsemen.
And if I took his spot, I'd be on more equal footing with the brothers.
"I take you two back, and there is no more demanding that I pick between you. I can't, I'm in love with both of you assholes," I looked from one to the other, and they laughed. "Which I know can be my downfall, but it's true. I love you both, and want you both."
"No more asking you to chose," Michael pulled me to him first. "I love you, and I'll take you however I can get you. Even if I have to share with the Brat."
"Yeah, what he said," Luc maneuvered his hand under Michael's so he could touch me before he kissed my cheek. "And I know we're on more equal footing now."
"We are," I slipped my new dagger into my robe. "My first order of business is to find the loyal Reapers."
"We have them for you," Michael kissed my other cheek. "We rounded them up and stashed them somewhere safe. We couldn't let Gregory know we knew, but we also couldn't allow a bloodbath like he wanted."
"They've been reaping souls," Luc took my hand and started leading me away from the fallen. "I'll take care of this, because they're all coming to me anyway."
"It's over?" I stopped and looked at them both. "That easy?"
"We couldn't help you," Michael took the hand Lucifer wasn't holding. "But, that didn't mean we couldn't set the rest of this up. You didn't need us to kill Gregory, you caught him by surprise and did that. But the rest, may or may not have been us."
"Assholes," I said again and they laughed. "So, do I get a bigger house now?"
"Anything you want," Lucifer assured me. "You have offices in both Heaven and Hell."
"I'll need to visit those," I nodded. "And soon. I guess I should get started."
"Yes, it's chaos," Michael admitted. "Get them to heel. Quickly. Establish your dominance fast."
"I have you two by my side," I grinned. "What more do I need?"
