A once life filled and joyful body hung from a rope attached to a fan on the ceiling. The body swings motionless, back and forth by the neck. Within a few hours, friends and families are informed of a new tragedy that struck the city. Hearts shatter like glass vases plummeting to the ground. Tears were spilled when the weary ears head the news. On August 10, 2013, Adrienne Salicine committed suicide, and no one knows why.

A week later after Adrienne’s funeral, the air still felt eerie. While I was walking home, the sky was blue and cloudless, and the temperature was nice. Usually on a nice day like that day, my neighbors would hang out outside with their dogs or kids, playing and laughing the day away. Instead, the streets were dead. I guess Adrienne was the light and happiness of the block. Since she left, everyone’s souls went with her.
While I was walking home, I saw one of her best friends, Lilian Evans sitting on the front porch of her home with her knees brought up to her chest. She was the first person I saw outside on that day. “Hey, Lilian!” I exclaimed to get her attention as I trotted up to her.
Her head shot up at me as I approached her.
“How are you holding up?” I asked her plopping a seat next to her.
She gave me a sarcastic laugh and then responded, “You know, it’s been a month, but her death is still hanging over me.”
“Yeah. Me too.” I leaned back and looked at the bright sky. “I can’t believe she died the way she did. No one deserves to die like that…”
Something I had said struck Lilian’s immediate attention, as she spun her head to me with widened eyes. “Wait, you know too?”
I raised my eyebrow at her in confusion. “Know what?”
“How Adrienne died.” Hope arose in her face.
“Y-yeah, I do. Everyone knows how.”
Then, all the life drained from her face once again. “How do you think she died?”
“She committed suicide.”
A heavy sigh was released from Lilian’s lungs. “Oh, you don’t know.”
“Know what?”
Lilian made a face at me that I never thought I’d see in her. She had a mixture of despair and sorrow in her sapphire blue eyes. Her eyes struck me deep in the soul, and her lips moved slowly as she told me, “Adrienne didn’t commit suicide. She was murdered.”
