As I looked out the sliding glass door, I saw a creature slumped against the door. I was shaking in fear, my blood ran cold. As I took a step closer the lights flicked on. I spun around and saw Shaun. He was rubbing the sleep away from his eyes. His brown hair a mess on top of his head. "Devin, what are you doing up at this hour? It's almost 5 o'clock on a Monday morning. Are you OK?" His eyes becoming alert as he took in my pale skin and shaking hands. "I-I'm fine bro. Go back to bed. I couldn't sleep so I'm going to start getting ready. Love you." I walked over to him and hugged him. My small stature being dwarfed by him. He gave me one last look before he walked back to his room.
I made my way back up stairs and sat on my bed. The rain still creating the soft patter. My mind wandering back to my dream. They felt so real. Shaun said they were my minds way of dealing with my parents, but I knew better. I jumped off my bed, determined to put the night behind me and move on. As I walked into the bathroom I looked at my appearance in the mirror. The girl I saw was not who I used to be. I lost all luster in my maroon eyes. My hair that I used to love reminded me to much of her. The way she used to laugh, or when her soft, brown hair would blow in the wind as I ran to her. I turned away and continued on getting ready. Every time I closed my eyes I could see the shadows. Even when the lights were on, the unknown terrified me.
I was ripped from my thoughts as Shaun banged on the door telling me to hurry. I got out and walked to my room. Turning on every light I saw. I opened my closet and grabbed my comfiest blue, skinny jeans and my favorite black t-shirt. Throwing them on, I slipped on my TOMS and made my way to the kitchen. Shaun was already down here making my lunch for the day. When he saw me he smiled, yet it didn't reach his eyes. He hasn't given me a real smile since the incident. I knew how he felt. Glancing at the clock above the door, I saw it read 6:21. I gave Shaun one last hug before I grabbed my lunch and my bag. I started my journey to school. The cold air nipping at my still damp, wavy hair. Wrapping my arms around me I noticed the chilling silence. I was used to it by now, there was never anything to listen to now. The walk to school seemed to short today. I wrapped my arms tighter around myself as I walked past my peers. They all seemed so happy, like nothing in the world bothered them. Lucky them. I made my way to the one person I actually trusted. Christian was sitting by the bleachers like he does every day. I smiled as he looked my way, his eyes sparkling with a hint of wildness. He walked up to me right as the bell rang. he smiled and held out his arm for me to take " after you m'lady" he said in his fake British accent. We walked to class laughing and for once I forgot about the shadows. Bad choice.
