"Good morning everyone, my name is Joy Heathens"

Those were the words I used to introduce myself to everyone. I always paired it with the biggest smile I could muster to avoid bad impressions. My pigtails were swaying as I stared left and right, my self couldn't stop thinking about all the possibilities of having a friend.

but then they all started laughing.

"What a weird name you got there, freak."

"Are you a monster or something?"

"Your parents must've really hated you."

As a child, I never even bothered with having such weird names. In fact, I never even cared if my name was different. Names are just names that someone will call you. Not that names signify who you really are. That's absurd!

But sometimes, names are also important. It gives others your information about yourself. It's like your giving other people the permission to know you, be close to you. That's why our elders tell us that we shouldn't trust enough to give our names to strangers.

My parents always reminded me to never talk to strangers, and if I ever ignore those pieces of advice – I'll be in great trouble. It never occurred to me that strangers could be so dangerous that parents had to be so suspicious of every person talking to their kid.

But to a child's point of view, strangers are just friends they haven't met yet.

Innocent as ever. Like a tiny snowflake stuck on a puppy's nose. Each word or phrase filled with Genuity with no lies attached to it. What they see is what they feel. Their mind's pure, not yet tainted by despair from the world.

Even in school. My mother would ask how I was and if anything happened while I'm at school. Always worried about my being. To say at least, I was blessed to have parents like them. Well, that was before. Times have changed drastically. But still they're my parents and I love them. Their bits of advice still lingers in my mind. Constantly reminding myself like a broken record playing again and again in my head. Plagued and embedded deep within as my inner voices that I could practically project their serious faces in front of me, fingers pointed at me to pay close attention.

"Joy, you should never trust strangers."

"Don't talk to them. Never let them know your name"

"If they're offering you treats, don't be fooled."

"They're only speaking in a way that convinces you they're good, but in fact, they're not."

"They might hurt you, so be careful."

The little me, without much of a choice, nodded. Just follow mum and dad's orders – To be as wary as ever. And in hopes that I'll be safe from harm.

My body jolted upwards as soon as possible. Hearing that sudden voice got my reflexes the best of me. Eyes scanning the entire room, looking for something foreign in my surroundings. My heart began to palpitate. Palpitating with terror. Beads of sweat rolling down my face while searching for the owner of that unsuspecting sound. The silence was only getting louder and louder.
