DISCLAIMER:
The following information is NOT required to understand or read the novel! Feel free to skip this chapter!

The information below provides general and basic background information to select phrases and/or names that appear within the novel. The information will not spoil the story and is meant to provide just a basic understanding of what they mean. As stated in the disclaimer, you do not NEED this information and you may skip this chapter if you so choose.

1) The Maiden
            - This simple phrase refers to the Maiden of Death. She is the first-born daughter of the Dark God and is worshiped by vampires. It is widely rumored that the Maiden was the original creator of the Vampire Species and that it is because of her they are given the gift of immortality.

2) The Maiden's Chosen
            - Like any other God or Goddess, it is believed the Maiden of Death is able to bestow her blessing to a champion. It is believed that only the strongest of warriors among vampires are worthy of the blessing, but unlike others, the Maiden is believed to ever only choose one champion, not several.

3) The Eternal Throne
            - The Eternal Throne is a myth among vampires. A legend of a time when all vampires stood beneath a single banner. The truth of this, however, has been lost and no one save for the Gods could tell if it really exists. Despite being a simple legend, the Eternal Throne has gained a cult following, with many believing an heir to the throne would one day arise and rally all of its banners.

4) The Prince of Shadows
            - The Prince of Shadows is another title that Lord Aldrin is known by. The title is given to a select chosen favorite of the Dark God and is rumored to be guided by him. Aldrin is the only being to have carried the title for over a hundred years, as it is known that the Dark God has little care for vampires or other immortal beings.

5) Mortals vs Immortals vs Celestials
             - Mortal is a term used to describe beings that do not live over two hundred years. Most entities called mortals live less than a hundred, are prone to die of disease and old age. Mortal beings tend to live in fast-growing populations. (Ex: Humans)
            - Immortals are beings who have a strong immunity to disease, live well over several hundred years of age and do not age with time. On a rare occasion, an immortal may die of a disease, however, most will die at the hands of another entity. Unlike mortals, children among immortals are rare and is often seen as a gift from the Gods. (Ex: Vampires)
            - Celestials are beings that do not age with time and are immune to disease altogether. They only ever die when struck down by another being. With the exception of the Gods and Goddesses, celestials keep to themselves on the Celestial Plain. Children are near non-existent, and only ever come when another dies. This has lead to a rumor that all celestials are reincarnated, making them truly everlasting beings. (Ex: Angels and Gods)

6) Shadow-born
            - The term is primarily used to describe Aldrin and his siblings, Luthar and Karen. However, it is a far older term used by the Gods and Goddesses to refer to beings that were born or created by magic. Among mortals, the phrase Child of the Night, also refers to a being born of magic.

 7) The Night
            - Among mortals and immortals, the true source of Magic has always remained a mystery, but there are a select few who claim to know the source. They call it The Night. An entity purely made of energy that is believed to be the source of all magic. The theory is mostly rejected by most societies who refer to the believers as cultists seeking to force those able to use magic into worshiping a make-believe God.

8) Wallwalk
            - this is a term that specifically references a walkway attached to the side of a wall, most notably like that along a palisade wall.

9) The Shadow Plane
            - The Shadow Plane is an alternate dimension that co-exists alongside the Mortal World (or Living World). It is an exact replica of the whole planet with the exception that all the lands are barren and scorched. For any human, it would be near impossible to live there on their own, however, creatures like vampires and wraiths find refuge within this dimension. Access to the dimension can either be found at specific locations across the planet or created temporarily though magic.

10) Heartland
            - Heartland is the name of the region in which this story takes place. The region is located on the east side of the mainland called Caldora. It is surrounded on three borders by a chain of mountains that make up the Spine of the World (A mountain chain that runs along the volcanic rift responsible for the creation of the continent). The eastern lands of Heartland end in a coastline. The cost of the region borders some of the most dangerous waters as the beaches are decorated in razor-sharp rocks protruding from the water. This has made shipping efforts to Heartland near-impossible save but by small boats with skilled captains. The only other way in and out of Heartland is through the Northern and Southern Dwarven Gates.

11)Thrall
            - A Thrall is a mindless vampire void of independent thought. When a vampire bites a human, they have three choices. Feed, Turn the mortal, or Sire a Thrall. To male a threall, they proceed to turn the mortal and halfway through the process, cast a spell that suppresses the subjects self-conscious. The result is a mindless vampire that will obey every command their sire gives.
