Silently I walked to the meadow where we always played as kids. Jeremy insisted that I meet him tonight but wouldn't give me a reason why. I stopped in my tracks when the meadow came into view. The fireflies were dancing in the tall grass making it seem like the stars came down from the heavens. My gaze shifted to where a red blanket was spread on the ground. A single lantern sat in the middle casting a warm glow on the surrounding area. He was there, setting up what looked to be a radio. He had his back turned to me and I could barely out his messy brown curls.

Ba bump. Ba bump. My heart pounded in my chest. Jeremy is my eldest friend so why did seeing him right now feel so...strange.

"What's this? A midnight picnic?" I called out emerging for the treeline.

"Maybe, would that be so bad?" As he turned towards me I could see a mischievous glint in his eyes.

We sat and talked about the things we used to do as we ate his specialty, peanut butter sandwiches.

"Do you remember how we used to say the fireflies were fairies?" He asked looking at his watch.

"Yeah, using their magic we could do whatever we wanted." Ba bump. Ba bump. Why won't my heart stay calm?

"Well I'm gonna need all of that magic tonight." He looked at his watch again.

"Are you late for something?" I asked both curious and disappointed.

"No, right on time actually." He hesitantly reached over and turned on the radio.

Holding his hand out to me he helped me to my feet. "Fairies give me courage." I heard him mumble softly. "Jess, dance with me."

I was about to ask what to when the DJ gave me the answer. "Next up is a song written by local Jeremy Summers titled Firefly."

He pulled me closer as a soft melody began to play.

Like the firefly light all around you light up my world without a sound. Do you even try?

As if on cue the surrounding fireflies grew in number and brightness.

Are we destined to be just friends? Or could we be more?

Ba bump. Ba bump. "Jeremy?" I questioned unsure. He just smiled nervously while we continued to sway.

I want to be more. I want to be the one you want to comfort you. The one you spill your secrets to.

"Jess you're more than just a friend to me." He whispered softly.

I want to be yours. To give all of my love to you. To hold your hand and do what lovers do.

"Am I just a friend to you?"

Tell me do you want me too?

Ba bump. Ba bump.

As the song ended I was left staring at Jeremy in awe. Standing on the tips of my toes I answered his question as our lips met. "You are so much more."
