The girl in the attic
Chapter 4
Katie's POV
He stood there looking at me like he had just seen a ghost. He looked confused, shocked and worried all at the same time.
"We have to get you t a hospital, that cut looks pretty bad," he said focusing his eyes on the wound on my leg. I was in such a hurry trying to get away from this boy without being caught that I managed to cut my leg. I fell as I made my way up the ladder and a protruding nail stuck into my leg and slashed it open. The pain is awful but I'll worry about that later because right now I have bigger problems.
"No, I'm fine. I'm just going to go home now," I lied hoping that he would agree and leave me alone.
"I can give you a lift, do you live around here?" He questioned looking suspicious and I knew he wasn't going to just let it go.
"Yea... I live close by so don't worry about me, I'll just walk," I answered as I cursed myself for letting this happen. I knew that he moved in today and was staying on the second floor, I should have been more careful. This could ruin everything.
"Look, either I'm taking you to a hospital or I'm taking you home. You need that cut looked at and there is no way you're going to be able to walk on it anyway," the boy said a little louder but he still didn't move any closer. He looked confused about what to do.
I had to get away from him before he figured out what was going on, he already knew too much and it won't take long before he starts piecing it all together. I had to warn Lina and get my things out of the attic before he can tell his Aunt and Uncle.
Preston's POV
She looked so fragile and weak as she stood up from the ground. I could see how much pain the cut was causing her but for some reason she was trying to pretend that it didn't hurt.
"See... I'm fine," she said in a shaky voice as she took a wobbly step towards me.
"I still think you should see a doctor," I replied hoping to talk some sense into her.
"May I pass please?" She asked softly as she took another step in my direction. I didn't know what to do so I stepped aside so that she could pass.
"Thank you," she whispered, like I was doing her a really huge favor by moving out of her way. She took another step and was just about to pass me when her leg gave in beneath her and she started falling. Luckily I was right beside her and managed to catch her before she hit the ground. She looked at me in shock as I gently helped her to sit down.
"I told you that you need to have that cut looked at," I said jokingly trying to lighten the mood but failing miserably.
"No... no. Please just leave me alone," She whispered as tears started running down her cheeks.
"I can't just leave you here like this, you need help," I said trying to convince her. By now I had figured out there was a lot more bothering her then just the cut on her leg. She looked terrified and nervous, something was very wrong with this girl. I could see the bones of her body sticking through her clothes and her hair was tangled and in a mess.
"Please don't do this to me," she pleaded through her sobs.
"Ok, how about we go to my house to clean the wound and then you can go on your way," I suggested. That cut was pretty deep and was definitely going to get infected if she didn't clean it.
"No!" She half yelled almost giving me a fright. The look on her face was panicked and I could see her body shake with fear as she looked at me pleadingly.
"Ok, we won't go to my house, just calm down. I'm trying to help you," I said still a bit shaken by her reaction.
"I have to go," she whispered as she wiped the tears from her face.
"I've got one last idea. How about I go get some medicine to clean your wound at my house and you wait here for me. I'll only be a few minutes and I won't even tell anybody what I'm doing. You can clean your wound and then we will both feel better," I said hoping that she would allow it.
"Ok, but you have to promise not to tell anybody," she replied looking at me with her pleading eyes.
"I promise I won't say a word, now try to relax and I'll be back before you know it," I said as I hurried over to the ladder and climbed down.
I ran all the way back to my house and only came to a stop when I was in my bathroom. I quickly grabbed the medical kit my parents had bought for me before sending me here and made my way back to the barn. This time I wasn't afraid of what I might find, instead I was worried about the strange girl. I got to the barn much quicker than the first time and made my way up the ladder but she wasn't where I had left her. I searched the whole barn and the surrounding area without any luck, she was gone.
