Naila called again for the fourth time in a row. Zara silenced it not wanting to deal with her sister. Why couldn't Naila take the hint that she didn't want to meet Ethan, Zara thought. Her phone rang again and she knew this time she had to pick up.
"Hello" Zara answered in a bored tone.
"Hello? Hello?? Is that all you say! Not even a sorry" Naila huffed and Zara couldn't help but roll her eyes. Her sister could be so dramatic at times.
"Okay, sorry. How can I help Naila?"
"Seriously?! You know why I'm calling, don't you" Naila asked. Zara crossed her fingers hoping she wouldn't mention Ethan.
"You need me to babysit?" Zara tried her luck knowing it wasn't that.
"No, although that would be helpful. I spoke to Ethan," Zara unintentionally groaned, "hey come on now anyway he said that he can't wait to see us. He couldn't believe we both have kids-"
"You told him about Maya?" Zara cut her sister off, now she was furious.
"Err yeah, what's wrong with that?"
"Naila, that's not your place. I didn't even want Ethan to know I'm still here let alone about Maya. Of course you'd open your big mouth and blab on about things that have nothing to do with you. I'm not meeting him that's final!" Zara hung up.
She couldn't believe her older sister. It wasn't her place and now Ethan knows things she wasn't ready to tell him. She wasn't ashamed of having a baby at all but the situation she was in wasn't ideal. Her phone pinged continuously and she checked it, ready to ignore if it was Naila. Much to her surprise it was actually André. He asked for her number for work purposes, or so he claims. She read the text about organising a year three activity day and replied back with a short message.
Her mind drifted off to Ethan and how they first met.
Yes, they were high school sweethearts. Puppy love and naïvety were mingling around in the air during this time.
To be honest, it made Zara sad thinking about it. Why couldn't it just work out like she had envisioned it to? Everyone had high hopes her and Ethan would last and now she began to wonder if that was part of the problem too.
It wasn't like they had spilt because of a negative incident, no one cheated; no one lied; no one caused the other much hurt. It was just because they drifted apart. She refused to believe that people genuinely stop loving each other but apparently they just do. Well, he claimed to just stop loving her.
Since splitting with Ethan, Zara made many mistakes in her life. The only true blessing was Maya. She was certain that she would make those mistakes an infinite times over if that meant that her baby girl would be a result.
Zara nearly chewed her lip off thinking about Ethan. It wasn't the time and nor was it healthy. She glanced at the time; it was a lot later than she thought. She had to get Maya ready for bed.
"Maya, baby, lets get into bed" Zara called out, only to hear a grunt in response. Zara picked up Maya, who although was a baby weighed quite a bit, and carried her to her princess-style bed. Zara hated this bed with a passion but it made Maya happy so what was Zara supposed to do.
"Mummy, can you read me my story?" Maya asked sleepily.
"Of course baby" Zara replied, grabbing Maya's story book. It was one of the many fairy tales Maya owned and Zara read a few pages until Maya was sound asleep.
Zara stared at her child, she was a spitting image of her dad who basically abandoned them before she was born. He was a worthless partner and an even more useless dad to Maya. It was an incredibly difficult time in both of their lives and Zara was just beginning to move past it. There was no way she wanted to start a new romance or rekindle an old one.
