Doofus Rick x Apathetic!Reader
Y/N has never been one to feel things as she should. From a young age she was silenced by those around her, rejected by her peers, and used by her superiors. In order to cope, she became apathetic, never caring for anyone or anything in the least. Unfortunately, that rule also applies to herself. Since nothing matters in the grand scheme of things nothing she does to others or herself matters, either. A space octopus could suck off her face and she wouldn't care, not in the least.
So, it was odd that when Y/N saw a rather goofy looking man being picked on by a few other men that she actually intervened.
It started off as any other day. You woke up, got dressed, grabbed your gun, and headed out. You had a day off from your usual job (selling illegal substances to aliens across the universe) and decided to go to an ice cream place on Exdone-9. Everything was going well as you enjoyed your ice cream until your ears pick up on a rather loud conversation.
"Hey, look, it's the doofus! Did you guys know he eats his own shit?" A familiar voice goads. You recognize the voice as a Ricks', turning your head to watch the conversation play out. Ricks are usually your customers, but all of them are different in some way.
The second rick laughs, nearly doubling over, "That's fucking gross! It's practically eating yourself, shitlord!" You narrow your (e/c) eyes towards them, the "Doofus Rick" clearly distressed. Not like you care, not at all, these guys are just pushing your buttons.
"Wh-Why do you guys have to be so mean all of the t-time? I just wanted to eat some Ice cream..." Doofus Rick whines, slouching over with his head between his hands. You can clearly see the tears building up in his eyes, and feel an unfamiliar anger bubbling up inside of you.
'Just who the hell do they think they are?' You think to yourself, now forgetting completely about your treat. Standing up abruptly, effectively gaining their attention, you stomp over to them angrily.
"Woah, check it out!" Rick number one exclaims, whistling at your body, "What are you up to, b-Aa-be?" he throws an arm over your shoulder, the whiskey on his breath nearly making you vomit. You shrug off his arm, gritting your teeth in anger.
"Well, I was going to enjoy my day off but you assholes ruined it. Why are you picking on him?" You snap at the two, jabbing your thumb towards Doofus Rick. One of them rolls their eyes, crossing his arms in annoyance.
Doofus Rick looks at you with sad eyes, "I'm okay, it's n-no big deal..." It comes out almost apologetically, tugging at your heartstrings. What the hell is wrong with me today?
"Yeah, well, you guys better back off before I make you." you say warningly, pulling out your gun only to have it taken by one of the annoying Ricks. You simply glare.
They quickly break the gun before dropping it to the floor and walking away. Doofus Rick frowns, bending down to pick up the pieces before giving them to you. "Th-Thanks a lot... I have some stuff to fix this back home if y-you need to fix it..." You just nod, not very phased by the damage. He opens up a portal to his garage, getting you the tools.
You stay for several days, frustrated that you couldn't fix it sooner. Rick has been so nice to you the whole time, too. It's odd, foreign and makes you apprehensive in a way. You'd be lying if you said he didn't make an impression on you, though.
You sit down and get to work once again on the third morning, not casting him a second glance as you work on fixing your ray gun. He's been sitting there each time, watching you with appraising eyes. It makes you sick.
"I didn't do it for you, you know?" You finally let out, "I don't care about you or anyone." Rick tilts his head in confusion, his large front teeth biting at his lip.
"Y-You don't even care about yourself?" Rick just can't bring himself to believe it, how can someone just not care?
You simply shrug, continuing to repair your ray gun. "When it comes down to it, Rick, nothing I do matters at all. Nothing about me matters, and that's just how life goes." Rick looks to you in disbelief before a wide grin spreads across his features. You catch a glimpse of pure determination in his eyes for just a moment and turn your head away with a blush. You can't care. You didn't care, right? Oh, how you hate this Rick, too positive and cute for his own good.
"Y-You do matter, Y/N! You're b-beautiful, positive, and smart. That counts, doesn't it?" You scoff, your cheeks turning a darker shade of crimson. "I-I mean, you matter to me. Hasn't anyone ever-ever told you that before?" You mentally answer with a no, pursing your lips. "I-I mean, you helped me when all those other Ricks were b-being mean to me. So you do matter, you-you matter to me, at least. Even if that m-may just be because..." he looks down, blushing as well, "because I... I love you."
You drop your screwdriver in shock, looking to him with wide eyes. "You... love me?" You raise an eyebrow in doubt, mouth slightly open. He nods bashfully, rubbing the back of his neck which is tinted pink.
"Y-Yeah, I do... I've never met anyone like you. I-I've never had anyone stand up for me like you did, either... B-But don't think that you don't matter, cause I know you matter. I may be considered D-Doofus Rick, but I'm not stupid." Rick reaches over, grabbing your hand, "I know I'm not stupid, because even I can tell you matter."
You can't bring yourself to deny him, leaning in with a gulp before kissing him gently.
For the first time in your life, you felt like you mattered. You did matter, and you had the sweetest Rick in the entire multiverse to prove it.
Hey, everyone. Hope you enjoyed, I'm a little rusty but I hope this is somewhat decent!
