"Hey guys, look at this!" Riley's voice distracted us as we were heading into the beach cafe.
He was pointing at a poster on the notice board outside.
"Sweet! There's going to be a competition on the beach next week!" Kai sounded excited.
"What sort of competition?" I asked, not yet intrigued by the prospect.
"Knitting," Kai pulled a face at me, "Obviously sports, what else would it be?" he rolled his eyes.
"It could have been a sand castle competition or something," Kai was getting a bit too big for his boots and I knew I was going to have to put him back in his place soon.
"Now that sounds like fun!" Vincent chirped.
"You've never sounded more feminine," Blake snorted.
"What's the matter Vinny, afraid of a little exercise?" Peyton chuckled, nudging him gently.
"No!" he exclaimed, turning slightly red. "I'm more afraid of competing against those guys," he nodded towards Mia's gang who were just heading towards the cafe.
"I bet they play dirty," Riley scowled in their direction. I couldn't stop my eyes searching for Mia in their little crowd. We briefly made eye contact before she looked away, I swear I saw a slight blush on her cheeks.
"Oh please, this is way too funny! The Montgomery gang are thinking about competing in that sports competition," the gang's leader, Luke, exclaimed, chuckling. The rest of his sad little gang fell about laughing with him.
"I don't see why that's so amusing, Luke," Elijah stepped up to him, apparently not afraid.
"Its funny to me that you guys think you would stand a chance against us," Tristan spoke up from behind Luke.
"Oh please. You've already felt how strong my right hook is Tristan, do you need reminding?" Peyton really hated Tristan after how he had embarrassed her. In fact, Eli had to hold his arm out to stop her leaping at him.
"How about you lot keep walking and we'll let the competition decide the winner," I spoke up, quite frankly getting bored of the rivalry. After what Mia had said, I realised the whole thing was pointless.
"Look who's speaking up for himself now! I didn't know you had a voice, Little Montgomery," Luke feigned amazement. He called me that because he knew it annoyed me, even though I was taller than my brothers, I was still the youngest.
Luke and I were friends a long, long time ago, before he fell in with the wrong crowd outside of school. The type of guys who thought it was funny to go out drinking and starting fights.
"I said, keep walking Luke," I rolled my eyes slightly. He didn't scare me, he just reminded me of one of those yappy chihuahuas.
He looked me up and down again before snorting and walking off, followed by his posse.
Gabriella winked at me as she walked past, but Mia kept her head down. It was probably bad how much that dissapointed me.
"Come on, let's go somewhere else," I sighed, officially put in a bad mood.

"Come on, you can do better than that!" I yelled at Vincent as he ran between markers I had set up on the beach.
"Why do we have to do exercise on vacation," he cried out, wincing in pain.
"I don't need you embarrassing us next week," I informed him.
"You're not making anyone else run. Look at Eli, he gets to just sunbathe!"
"Eli hasn't skipped gym class for the last two years, now drop and give me twenty!" I blew my whistle at him. I heard him mumble something about 'Montgomery competitiveness' under his breath, but decided to ignore it.
Everyone else was practising different sports on the beach, except for Kai and Riley who were playing Tag with just the two of them, I don't think that counts.
I walked over to where Eli was sunning himself and kicked sand onto him.
"Hey!" he shouted. In the past I would have been scared to piss off Elijah Antonelli, but since he had started dating my sister he had proven what a softie he was.
"We're supposed to be getting ready for the competition," I chastised him.
"Do you know how hard it is to be a pale Italian boy? My sisters bully me about it all the time. I have to absorb all the sun light I can," he put his shades back on and lay back down.
Again, I kicked the sand over him. I think I pushed him too far that time as he jumped up onto his feet and began chasing me.
"You're going in the sea where you belong, Sebastian!" he chased after me. Apparently, the prospect of throwing me in the water excited all of the boys who joined in the chase.
I put up a good fight, but there's only so long you can fend off five guys chasing you.
They tackled me to the ground and each grabbed a limb, except Vincent who just ran along laughing like a maniac.
"Revenge is sweet!" he heckled.
"You're gonna be singing 'Under the Sea' any minute now," Elijah chuckled.
"No, I'm not," I decided as I gave out my strongest kick and managed to loosen their grips. I began sprinting as soon as I was free. I had a head start due to their confusion and it was enough to get far ahead of them.
I sprinted to the life guard shack and managed to hide behind it, the others no where in sight.
"Well, isn't this a surprise," Gabriella walked over to where I was hiding. She must have been able to see the boys chasing me from where her friends were on the beach. Behind the shack, we were out of sight of everybody.
I felt awkward, I didn't know what to say. The other night hadn't included very much talking at all.
"I was hoping you would be able to escape your brothers so I could get you alone," she bit down on her lip. I was beginning to understand what Mia was talking about now, about how I shouldn't feel special that Gabriella wanted me. She was far too confident to not have treated guys like this many times before.
"Why exactly would you want that?" I asked, not sure if I was genuinely curious why she wanted me, or if I was meant to be flirting.
"It's exciting isn't it?" she wrapped her arms around my shoulders and kissed me.
"How do you mean?" I asked, not yet kissing her back. For some reason, I had to get to the bottom of the situation before I kissed her. I had never been like that before. If a girl kissed me, nothing in the world would stop me kissing her back.
"Our friends are enemies, and yet we've found a common interest," she kissed me again. "Its dangerous, we could get caught at any minute."
She kissed me again, more deeply this time and I briefly kissed her back, despite how uncomfortable that answer made me. It just didn't feel right.
I stepped away from her and shook my head.
"Do you know what, I think I'd prefer to kiss someone who actually likes me as a person, not just the situation. See you, Gabriella," I said, before walking off.
It was unfathomable, but somehow the prospect of my brothers finding me and throwing me in the ocean was more appealing than kissing such an attractive girl.
I guess Eli was right, and I was looking for something special.
