I can start this book by saying that never would have I imagined to be so emotionally attached to my native country. Only once I left Italy, crossing the Atlantic Ocean, landing in a different country, with a different language and different people, I would have found out what it really meant to be far from your country and feeling attached to it more than ever.
It was hard, at the beginning. In Italy I had all my friends at school, but over here I knew no one, I couldn't even speak French. Everything seemed so hard, so different, I just couldn't stop thinking about how life was very different from Italy, and how much I missed it, and still now I miss my parents, my siblings, my dog, the food and all of my friends.
But I'm happy to say that I'm still here and still feeling like a part of the beautiful country that Canada is. This experience has made me grow and I'm really happy about that.
When I first arrived in Canada it seemed that everything reminded me of Italy.
I noticed that lot of companies, shops, and places had Italian names, and to make it worst, everybody said ''ciao'' when leaving (it turned out that most of the people didn't even know that ciao was Italian).
Each time I said that I was Italian, the person in front of me said «Oh! pizza pasta and spaghetti! »
It was quite funny, but their view was still rather stereotypical; like country known just for food and probably for the Italian mafia and the bad politics.
I know that Italy is so much more than that, but it's not known enough and that's probably the thing that makes me sad the most.
Because of that, I decided to leave all the preconceptions out of this book, talking about how incredible Italy is, highlighting that this country is not known only for its food, but it was also one of the biggest empires of all times (the Roman empire).
Furthermore it's one of the most famous countries in the world due to its rich artistry, its stunning landscapes, the territories, the wonderful weather, its kind and welcoming people and yes... finally, for the food!
I've decided to write this book to encourage people to be captured by their imagination as I'm taking you through a virtual tour of Italy in and out, up and down. In this book we will start to visit the north of Italy, the centre and finally the south, leaving a special space for my island. While visiting them we will be describing every city, what to visit, what to see, what to know and what to eat as well!
Hope you are going to love it the way I love Italy!
Ti amo Italia, ciao!
