Dusk slowly approached as the sun began sinking past the tree tops and the many hills of a forest to the left of the highway, very few vehicles drove on this road except for a couple random cars or trucks, as the sun finally set it was dark outside with the only lights coming from the headlights of the old pick up headed East away from Kentucky. The driver a young man in his early twentys named Ben and his wife Jennifer and their dog whom they affectionately called digger, they had been driving for a a couple hours to go on vacation to where they would meet up with friends, they took notice of the small number of cars on the road and Ben questioned "wonder where everyone is tonight, you would think more people would be out" to which Jennifer replied "who knows, I guess this isn't a popular road" Ben shrugged his shoulders as he continued to drive and turned on the radio to a rock station "oh well, the less people the better I think". A little further on down the road Ben had asked his wife for a cigarette and a lighter, after checking through her purse she found a pack of marlboro's opening the top there were few left she pulled on out handing it to him. afterwards he prompted her to give him a lighter, again she reached down in the purse and pulled it out, as she held it over to him he unkowingly ran into a pothole causing jennifer to drop the lighter between the seat and the console.
Ben shook his head "sorry about that, i didnt see the hole" Jennifer sighed while reaching between the seat and the console though she is unable to find the lighter, she complained "it's too dark I cant see a damn thing and I cant feel it" Ben took his eyes off the road to look down and back onto road, "there should be a flashlight in the glove box, that should help." Jennifer opened the compartment on the dash and picked out a small flashlight and quickly leaned over shining the light between the seat. "I think I see it" she reached her hand down and felt around on the floor for the lighter, her hand slightly nudged the plastic part, with a bit of re-adjusting she had managed to pull out the lighter. While she handed Ben the lighter they could barely hear the barking of Digger in the back of the truck, "whats wrong with him?" Ben asked as he began lighting the cigarette "I dont know cou- watch ou-!" with his attention caught on the cigarette and the small flame, Ben could not fully react to a deer that had lept out infront of the truck. The body of the deer hit the top of the hood in mid-jump sending it back against the winshield, blocking Ben's visual of his direction while he swerved way too late. Moments after the accident the truck had pulled off the road and crashed into a nearby tree, the impact forcing the truck to be incapable of being operated. Ben and Jennifer were then dazed by the startling event as they slowly and painfully got out of the vehicle.
