A loud noise woke up Mrs Otter in the middle of the night. She was living alone, so the noise quite scared her. "What could that be ?" she asked herself. She went downstairs and saw a shadow fleeing from the scene. She noticed that a flower pot was knocked down from the window sill, where she usually put her bag. She checked her bag and realized that someone stole her wallet. She immediately called the police.

Dave dogtective was a detective dog, who just got into the police force. One of his great traits is that he has a good nose, so you could say that he smells out crime. He was very excited this night since this was the first case he gets to solve.

When he arrived at the scene, he saw a trail of pawprints on the path leading to the house. He examined the lock and recognized scratch marks on the lock, which meant that someone forced something other than a key to get into the house.

"Oh officer, I'm so glad you came so fast," uttered out Mrs Otter in the doorway, who got her wallet taken from her, while she was snoring in bed. "Well, it is my job after all" Dogtective replied. His nose smelt some fur in the house, he crouched down and picked up a ginger strand of hair. "Look! We already have a clue! I heard, that you saw the shadow of the culprit, could you please describe what it looked like ?" he asked. "Well, they certainly fit in the doorway and they had a lot of furs. "Aha! I see," he replied, " let's ask around the neighbourhood then, someone may have stayed up and might have seen them." And so, they went around the block asking people, but instead of witnesses, they found two suspects, a ginger cat, and a fox. "Now, let's question them about what they were doing tonight," he said as he instructed them to get into the house. Both of them seemed nervous.

"So, you come first, alright ?" he pointed at the cat. "What's your name ma'am ?" he asked. "Well, I am Mrs Snowbell and I live with my husband who and three kits who still enjoy sleeping in the night. I work as a shop assistant. I was taking a walk around the park because I like the nocturnal lifestyle," she claimed. "And was there anyone who could confirm that ?" he asked. "Well, not certainly, but my husband can confirm that I went out for a walk," she responded. "So your alibi isn't solid, then. Now, may I ask your name too ?" he asked the fox. "Well my name is Dustin and I was doing my work project at home, but I live alone so no one can back it up." he murmured. "Well, neither of them have a solid alibi, and the clues point to the fox since most foxes are considered sly, but is he really ?" dogtective thought to himself. He looked both of them in the eye and observed their behaviour. The cat looked a bit nervous, the fox, on the other hand, looked extremely anxious. "Would it be alright if we would inspect your homes ?" he asked them calmly. "It would totally be fine by me sir !" shouted Dustin nervously, "there might be a big mess though." "Well, most certainly not, my kittens may have made a huge mess and I should tidy up after them if I am expecting visitors." That was when it clicked. Dave dogtective knew who was the culprit. "Thank you, now I know which of you stole the wallet, all it took was one slip up," he said with a grin. "Well, who is it officer ?" asked Mrs Otter angrily.

"Now, now let's recap all the things that have happened tonight, The culprit forced their claws into the keyhole, and got into the house. They came in and observed their surrounding. They noticed the bag on the window sill and took the wallet out while Mrs Otter was sleeping. They clumsily knocked down a flower pot while they were still fleeing, and Mrs Otter woke up and called the police. Dustin, you claim that you were working on a project, and you, Mrs Snowball, said that you took a walk in the park. When I asked you if we could inspect your homes, Dustin said that it's fine, but you Mrs Snowball, said that your kittens might have made a mess, but before, you said that they still enjoy sleeping at night. So, what is right Mrs Snowball ?" he pointed out. "Oh, well, alright, it was me who did it. But I didn't have any money to buy my kittens food, and I don't know where I went wrong that made me commit this crime! I swear I'll give the wallet back, just don't arrest me. I have a family." she cried out. "Well, a crime is a crime. I am sorry, but I will have to take you to the police headquarters" he said with a sad face. "Officer, it's alright if she gives it back. I can forgive her, she has children. I think you should apply for another job if you can't feed you kittens though." suggested Mrs Otter. "Ah, ok, ok," said dogtective with an accepting tone "I won't take you, but you better give back the wallet."

And so, Mrs Snowball gave Mrs Otter her wallet back with all the money untouched. Mrs Snowball got a new, well-paying job, and now she's friends with Mrs Otter. This case was masterfully solved by the perceptive Dave dogtective.
