Aria sat by the large glass window overlooking the street as she ate her lunch.
The coffee shop was full of customers, and behind her she could hear her coworkers bustling in the kitchen. She took a long, slow sip of her coffee, not wanting to go back to work just yet. Her gaze remained focused on the view of the snowy street outside the window.
"Hey Aria," a voice behind her greeted.
Startled, Aria spilled coffee onto the white apron of her uniform. She gasped as the hot liquid made contact with her skin.
"I'm so sorry! Let me go get some tissues, I'm sorry," the voice stammered.
Aria lifted her head and saw a head bobbing up and down as it rushed across the room. She knew who it was before the person turned around.
"Hi Jin," Aria greeted as the boy made his way towards her.
"I'm sorry about that," he chuckled, handing her tissues. "How'd you know it was me?"
"It's okay," Aria shook her head. "And I don't know too many people who know where I work. Why are you here? Did Piper send you?"
Jin took a seat next to her, turning the metal chair around to face her.
"Piper wanted me to ask you if you needed a ride tonight."
"Tonight?" Aria cocked her head to the side, looking at the older boy. He raised his eyebrows, a small smile escaping his lips.
"You forgot?"
Aria was silent as she racked her brain for reasons why she'd need to go somewhere with Jin, whom she barely knew.
"I really don't know," she whined. "I've been so busy with moving and work and-"
"Piper's birthday," Jin cut her off.
Has it really been that long?
Aria's mind raced as she thought back on the past few months. Between spending her time at the coffee shop and moving into her new apartment, time has flown by quite quickly.
"Well shit." She felt her heart race as a twinge of anxiety filled her chest. She tried hard not to let tears escape her eyes as she worried over her sister-in-law's birthday.
"I've been ignoring her and Tae's calls," she shared. "I feel so bad, I totally forgot about her birthday," she said quietly, her voice cracking.
"You're fine," Jin comforted with a smile. The soft expression on his face turned into a worried one once he noticed Aria's distressed reaction. "Do you need a ride to the dinner?"
"No it's okay, I can walk," she replied bluntly.
"Aria, it's negative 5 degrees outside, let me drive you," Jin insisted. He found Aria's behavior to be strange, but he kept his thoughts to himself. "You're going to freeze to death," he joked.
"I'll be fine," she said a bit louder. "I'll see you later."
Jin didn't say anything about the tear he saw sliding down her cheek, or the way her body shook when she started getting frustrated. He stayed beside her for awhile, and left the coffee shop without a goodbye.
