the original ending was that every died one by one. The last person standing was tobi. The book would have ended when tobi at the bridge. I wouldn't have said if he died or not like how lowry ended the giver. We do not know if Jonas is died or is in elsewhere with gabe just like we would have not known if tobi was alive or died.
