"Heavenly Father, we praise you for all your gifts to us. In a special way, we thank You for Lucia Bless her always in your love. Bless us too, Holy Father. Help us all to praise You and give You glory. Through Jesus Christ our lord. Amen."

Releasing hands, Lucia opened her eyes and looked into her families eyes. "Gracias sister." Her father dismissed the nun, leaving Lucia, her younger sister, Emilia and her mother in the room Lucia was assigned when she moved.

"You've grown up so beautifully, mi amor." Her mother smiled at her and she returned the smile. Her mother hated that she had to send Lucia away but she had no power over her father's power. It teared her apart for the first year to be with out her baby.

Her younger sister, Emilia was only five when she had to see Lucia go and was oblivious the fact that she wouldn't see her for another three years. Their father want them both to be independent, and has always been cold, distant and controlling.

Lucia looked down at Emilia adoringly. In return, Emilia stared up at her with her big brown eyes and small rosy cheeks.

"Happy birthday Lucy!!" Her sister smiled cheekily while wrapping her small arms around her neck. The joy of seeing her sister and mother once again overwhelmed her.

"Muchas gracias Emi" She kissed the top of her sister's head and held her body against her own then hugged her mother once more.

Lucia pulled away from the both of them then looked at her father. "Papa." She greeted with a straight face. After years of experience, she has learned that there are rare occasions were she could embrace her father.

He was always controlling and she was always watchful of his raised hand. Even after three years away from him, she understood his conditions and what she perceived as hatred towards her.

"Feliz Cumpleaños Lucia." He said with a nod. She gave him thanks and felt at ease when he spoke. It felt as though the tension in the room had somehow dissipated.

"Julia. Emilia. Déjanos" He ordered. As her mother began to stand, Emilia grabbed to the end of his sleep.

"But Papa, I want to spe—" Lucia cut her off knowing what was to come. She bent down to her sister's level before speaking to her.

"Emi, go with mama. We will see each other soon." She smiled at her sister's hopeful eyes. "Te amo pequeña." She kissed the top of her head, then pushed Emilia to their mother.

Once the door was closed, Lucia could feel the tension back in the room and she automatically stiffened. "Sit hija." She wordlessly did what she was told.

"You are aware that now that you are eighteen years , you have...new responsibilities." She nodded, completely understanding where this conversation was heading.
