Harry, Niall, Liam, Louis, and Zayn quickly became best friends after One Direction was formed. The band quickly became one of the most popular boy bands in the modern era. I don't think anyone expected things to explode like they did-- making the five young boys world famous and instant heartthrobs to millions of teenage girls. The five boys decided to purchase one large house in LA to be their home base and to move in together. It is beneficial and important for each of the boys to have their mates close by to lean on because only the five of them can understand just how crazy and overwhelming their lives can get.
The boys are still quite young and the fame, chaos, busy and tiring schedule, and newly found freedom can take a toll on them. That is why when they decided to move in together, they had a group discussion and all agreed that they needed to keep each other in line and hold one another accountable when they make a mistake. It was decided that since Louis and Zayn were the oldest that they would take on a sort of parent figure role most of the time and hand out punishments when rules were needed and one (or more) of the younger three boys act up. However, Zayn and Louis will also abide by the house rules and be held accountable and punished when necessary.
