PROLOGUE

Gabriel Knight stood near the wonky window frame of a local VET shop, rubbing both of his temples in a painfully slow motion.

'Damn' He muttered. This was fruitless, he had decided as he gave up on his attempt to cure his headache and let his hands drop.

He should not have kissed her. Again. Or ever really. Especially now of all times. Was it possible he was addicted to her? Could there be such a thing in the world? An addiction to a mere girl. He had no answers to this question and quite frankly neither did he want to find an answer. Either way Gabriel had bigger things to worry about at the moment. For one thing he had to get Anna out of the room somehow and either drag her back to his house and tell her the entire truth about him or drop on his knees and beg for her forgiveness, then disappear from her life for good. Truth was vastly overrated anyway.

In all honesty though, and Gabriel was aware of this, Anna did have a point. Gabriel should not have kissed her against her will. At least he should have given her more time to compose herself after the 'incident'. After all, it's not every day your childhood friend takes your first kiss by force. He would be patient with her, he decided in the heat of the moment but found his legs carry him towards the door somehow.

'ANNA! OPEN THIS DOOR RIGHT NOW!'

Or, not!

'Open the door or I swear I will crush it down!' He roared and slammed his fist against the solid oak door that was crooked in some places and made strange squeaking sounds at his every attack.

'Anna!'

'Leave me alone!' Anna's high-pitched voice threatened from the other side of the door.

Three long and painfully deep breaths later he tried his luck again, 'Just come out. Look, if you are angry about the kiss...'

The door opened suddenly and the next thing he knew Anna's open palm was well connected with his right cheek. In a blink of an eye the door was closed again. This happened in such a lightening speed that Gabriel did not even have time to flinch. But now, a good five seconds later, he could feel his cheek roasting, along with his temper obviously and his rapidly beating heart.

'How many was that?' Came an amused voice from behind fuming Gabriel who looked back and frowned at Michael, who was casually leaning against the wall, attempting to hide his laughter behind an awkward cough and a fist.

'Three.' Grunted Gabriel as he returned his gaze towards the damn barricade that stood between his chance to explain himself and an angry 5 foot 3 inch blond fireball. The last letter of the word was still hanging on the tip of his tongue when the door opened again and Anna's palm made another painful connection to his cheek. Left, this time.

'Let's make it an even four then, shall we?' She said as a matter of fact and hid herself behind the door again.

Michael had known his cousin for all his life and, as an expert, he was almost certain Gabriel would crush the door down any minute now, drag Anna outside and then bite her head off. Or, maybe, bite her head off first and then drag her dead body out. Or just bite her head off and leave her there to rot. It all depended on the level of Gabriel's anger. Either way Anna was as good as dead.

But to Michael's, and, in these strange circumstances, to Gabriel's great surprise, Gabriel just threw his head back and let out a roar-like laughter. He kept laughing like a mad man for good two minutes - his ribs aching, his eyes watering and his throat drying up. Finally he shook his head and slumped in the nearby armchair, drying his eyes off with the back of his sleeve.

Michael sat across him, still gaping like a fish.

'Four?' Michael asked carefully as he rested his arms on either side of the armchair.

'Four.' Nodded Gabriel, now smiling like a moron. He shook his head one more time and then licked his lips, as if he found his own smile sweet and irresistible.

'I don't know what to say... I... I...' Stammered Michael.

'She's mental.' Gabriel muttered, smirking.

'Probably. To think someone dared to touch you....and still be alive...''She is absolutely wild.' Gabriel, stillsmiling, murmured. 'What are you going to do?''To her?''Well,' shuddered Michael, 'I meant generally, but to her too, I suppose.''Generally...' Gabriel heaved a sigh, 'I am notsure.''I see.' Michael scratched his chin.'To her....''Not sure?' Michael hurried on.'Oh, I am sure! I'm just contemplating the ideawhether to tell you or not.''Now, see here,' Michael got angry suddenly, ' Iknow how upset you must be with all that Alpha male bullshit going on in yourhead. No one dares to touch a hair on your head and she goes and slaps you_''Thank you for the reminder_''Four times_''I don't need the count down.''But,' Michael carried on, 'if you think that Iwill let you hurt her in any way then...''It is very unlikely I will ever be able to hurther when I love her so much.'Gabriel muttered suddenly and instantly bit his lip. Alas, too late. The wordswere out and the damage was done. Michael choked on his own breath, then coughed, gasped, flinched and when he exhausted himself from all the physical emotionshe just snorted and fell dead silent, studying Gabriel carefully as he practicedhis own breathing skills. He did not mean to say it, he was certain of it.But Gabriel was too dumfounded to be sure of anything right now. Although, hewas quite certain that he'd never heard of such a thing before when a girlphysically abusing a very patient boy and by doing this, coxing him into lovingher. Because this was exactly what she was doing to him. What a mess his life had become. The way Michael was staring at him however, shocked and secretly very amused, told him that he could not go back on his ownwords. The one thing left now was for Gabriel to explain himself. The questionwas - how?
